The new organ has thirty-five speaking stops, eighteen couplers, three manuals, two swell boxes and a crescendo pedal.
The organ is located in two organ chambers on either side of the chancel, with the console in the front of the choir loft on the right hand in the front of the church.
The Church Choir
It appears that the first attempts at training the young people for choir singing was made by Mr. Charles O. Deere, a member of the church talented in music. A quartette consisting of Miss Alma Lind (Swensson), soprano, Miss Minnie Kohler, alto, J. P. Neander, tenor, and Peter Lind, bass, was organized in 1878. This quartette sang at the Christmas morning service in 1878 Vogler's "Hosanna" and "Ära vare Gud i höjden."
In the fall of 1879 Mr. J. F. Ring came here from Chicago, having accepted the position of vocal teacher at Augustana College. After conferring with a number of interested persons he called a meeting and organized a choir in October, 1879. There were 21 members in this choir. It made its first appearance on Advent Sunday when Vogler's "Hosianna" and "Ära vare Gud" were sung. These songs were used also the next Christmas. "Ett barn är oss födt på denna dag" by Man- kel was sung at the forenoon service. "Kommen att det nya året möta med jubel och med sång" was sung New Year's Day. The choir made excellent progress under the direction of Prof. Ring. It formed the nucleus for the Oratorio Society at Augustana College which, with the combined choirs from Rock Island, Galesburg, Orion, Geneseo and some from Chicago, numbered 200. This combined chorus rendered Han-

del's Oratorio "Messiah." The choir of the First Church won great laurels at the Jubilee in Rock Island in 1881. P. A. Edquist was di- rector of the choir then.
On October 12, 1888, the church choir was reorganized, and a sing- ing class directed by Wm. Ljung was merged with it. In the consti- tution adopted the following paragraph occurs: "The society shall have as its aim to arouse and maintain interest for church song among the young people of the First Ev. Lutheran Church of Moline and to take part with singing for the enhancement of the public worship and also to serve at festivals and other important occasions in the church." The following have directed the church choir: V. J. Tengvald, Jos. Lindstrom, J. A. Ekman, J. Moody, A. Söderman, C. M. Carlstedt, Adolf Hult, A. Norrbom, Constantin Svenson, W. Pearson, Dr. Gus- tav Stolpe, Dr. O: Olsson, A. S. Hamilton, Amanda Hult, Seth Kim- ball, C. L. Krantz, Mrs. J. Goodmanson, Wilhelmina Wistrand, Prof. Arvid Samuelson, Amy Granlund and Dr. O. H. Bostrom, the present director.
During the last six years in particular a special effort has been made to increase the Choir Library with the best choir music that can be obtained. The Music Committee of the church has made careful selec- tion of this music and arranged it fittingly for every Sunday and other festive occasions. Money for this purpose has been secured from the income of the Annual Choir Concert and from offerings at the regular Festive Song Service each month. Robes for the choir have also been secured through this fund. Already the Church Choir has one of the best, if not the best, music libraries in the Tri-cities. Pastors and the congregation have been and are grateful to the Church Choir for its helpful and inspiring service.
Church Orchestra
The present Church Orchestra was organized in the fall of 1922 by Mr. Ernest Herrstrum who also has been its director. It was organ- ized, primarily, to add to the entertainment of the social affairs in the church, and also to give to those who had the talent for playing a musical instrument an opportunity for added practice and instruction under Mr. Herrstrum's leadership, and at the same time stimulate an interest in church work. The orchestra meets for practice every Friday evening either at the church or at the home of one of its members. They have furnished music on several occasions for functions sponsored by

the various organizations of the church. The support of the orchestra has been maintained by receipts from one entertainment sponsored by them, and donations from the Men's Club and Junior Sorosis. A full set of drums and traps is owned by the orchestra as well as a large collection of music. Great credit and appreciation is due Mr. Herr- strum for his patience and faithfulness in directing the orchestra. He has received no remuneration for his services. E. A.

Men for the Ministry
A number of the pastors of the Augustana Synod have been members of our congregation for a longer or shorter period and particularly dur- ing their student days at Augustana College. Rev. K. M. Holmberg was a member for many years and served the church as deacon and Sun- day-school superintendent. His brother, S. P. Holmberg, was also a member of the church.
Two pastors are born and raised in Moline and have been members of the church from childhood until their ordination. These are: Dr. Adolph Hult, ordained 1899 and now Professor at Augustana Theo- logical Seminary ; he resides with his family in Moline and is a member of the church again. Rev. Oscar F. Bohman was ordained in 1923, and is pastor of the Lutheran Church in Akron, Iowa.
Missionaries
Mr. and Mrs. C. O. Forsberg have gone from our congregation to the Foreign Mission field. They were commissioned and left for China in 1913.

Statistics
The four pages of statistics printed in this volume were gathered from the printed Minutes of the Augustana Synod. These begin with 1860. From 1850 to 1860 there were no statistics published, as far as we could ascertain. In 1881 the statistics were omitted from the Synod's Minutes. It was therefore impossible to give the statistics com- plete for the seventy-five years of the congregation's history.
The First Lutheran Church, Moline, Ill., and Daughter Churches.
From 1850 to 1870 the First Church of Moline was alone to care for the Lutheran people who came from the Scandinavian countries and who located on the territory now known as the Quad-Cities and Port Byron. Many of the members had to walk great distances to attend services. The pastors also held services as often as possible in the out- lying districts of the congregation.
The daughter churches have been organized as follows:
First Lutheran, Rock Island, 1870.
Port Byron, 1875. Grace, Davenport, 1883.
Grace, Rock Island, 1888.
Zion, Rock Island, 1891.
Emanuel, East Moline, 1900. Salem, Moline, 1908. Trinity, Moline, 1912. Calvary, Moline, 1919.
On January 1, 1925, the total communicant membership of the First Church, Moline, and the daughter churches was 3,021, and the total baptized membership 4,096.
INTERIOR OF CHURCH DURING FESTIVAL.
The Diamond Jubilee
HE Diamond Jubilee or Seventy-fifth Anniversary of the organization of the congregation was observed with festive programs on November 29th to December 2nd. It was an occasion that was full of inspiration from beginning to end and will linger long in the memories of all who had the privilege to attend. The presence of two former pastors was an occasion for grati- tude and joy. Dr. and Mrs. Carl A. Hemborg came from Los Angeles, California, and Rev. and Mrs. A. F. Bergstrom with three daughters, Elaine, Ruth and Elizabeth, from Chicago, Illinois. Mrs. L. A. John- ston resides in Moline with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Martin J. Anderson. Mr. F. N. Andrén of Berwyn, Illinois, a son of the first local pastor, Rev. O. C. T. Andren, attended a part of the celebration. There were also four of Rev. H. O. Lindeblad's children present, namely, Luther of Chicago, Alvin and Alma Lindeblad and Mrs. Esther Bergstrom of La Grange, Illinois. The congregation was glad to see all these friends and to bid them and the many other visitors a hearty welcome.
Nature was garbed in a blanket of snow, but the temperature re- mained moderate. The attendance was large at all services and pro- grams, but particularly at the Confirmand Reunion, when many had to stand. The class of 1892 had invited their instructor, Rev. E. Glad, of Kiron, Iowa, who also took part in the program. At the Banquet there were 580 persons seated. A concert by the Church Choir made a very fitting close and climax to the four days of celebration of the Seventy- fifth Anniversary.
"O come, let us sing unto the Lord : let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation." Ps. 95. I.
