HISTORY.


The Forty-Seventh Illinois Infantry Volunteers was first or- ganized and mustered into the service of the United States at Peorla, Ill., on the 18th day of August, 1861.


On the 23d day of September, 1861, the regiment moved by rall, from Peoria to St. Louis, Mo., going into quarters at Bentou Barracks, near the city, where it was clothed and armed com- plete. Remained in Benton Barracks undergoing a thorough drilling dally until the 9th day of October, when it moved by

rail, to Jefferson City. Mo., where It remained, doing garrison duty. until the 22d day of Derember, when it moved by rail, to Otterville, Mo .: remaining there dril ing and doing garrison duty until the 24 day of February. 1sta. when it marched north to the Missourl river ; crossing at Boudeville, marched down the north alde of the river to St. Charles, where It arrived on the 18th day of February ; crossed the river at &t. t'harles and moved by rail to st. Louis, where it embarked on the steamer War Eagle and moved down the river, arriving at C'alro on the 23d day of February.


On the 25th day of February, moved back up the river thirty mlles to Commerce, Mo., where the regiment disembarked, and Joined Pope's command, then preparing for a campaign agalust Island No. 10 and New Madril.


Marched from Henton Wo .. March 24. arriving in front of the enemy's works at New Madrid. March 4th.


On the bight of March 10th, the regiment. with the 11th Mls- sonri Infantry, marched ten inlles below New Madrid, taking with them a battery of ligh artillery, to Point Pleasant, blockad - Ing the river and cutting off the eneloy's communication by river below New Madrid and Island No. 10. Here the regiment was brigaded with the 11th Missourt Infantry Volunteers. 26th Regleneht flinois Infantry Volunteers, and the 8 h Regiment Wisconsin Infantry, and placed onder command of Brigadier General Joseph B. Plummer. Remained at Point Pleasant en- camped In a disagreable swamp, with continual heavy rains until the 7th day of April.


The enemy having evacuated New Madrid uu the night of the 5th of April the regiment marched, with the brigade, up to New Madrid on the 7th, and un the 9th were pald four months' pay by Major Withrell.


On the morning of April 10 the reglinent embarked on board the steamer Aleck Scott and proceeded with the army duwn the river nearly to Fort I'lllow, returning on the morning of the 11th and disembarked at Tiptonville, Tenn., twenty miles below New Madrid. April 12th re-embarked and moved up the river to Cairo, drew clothing and took on coal, and ou the night of the 20th moved up the Tennessee river, arriving at Hamburg Land - lug. Tenn., on the morning of the 22d of April, ilsembarked and encamped near the river.


Durlog the following Afteen daya the regiment accompanied Gen. Pope's army In Its advance In the direction of the eurmy's positioni around Corinth. A portion uf the way it had to con- struct corduroy roads through extensive swamps, On the 9th day of May was engaged at Farmington, MIss., In which engage- ment Lieutenant Colonel Dantel L. Miles was killed. On the 28th day of May the regluent participated in an engagement hear Corinth. On the night of May 29th, the enemy evacuated Corinth and the regiment accompanled General Pope's army In pursuit of their retreating Forces as far as Hoonesville, Miss. returning to Camp Clear t'reck, six miles south of Corinth, June 11, 1862, where, in a few days, the regiment received two uunths' pay From Major Etting.


on the 3d of July the regiment marched to Rienzi, Miss .. remained there nutlt the 18th day of August, on which day Colonel John Bryner took leaveof the regiment-his resignation having been accepted, on account of poor health.


Auguat 15th broke l'amp Rienzi and marched to Tuscumbia. Ala., rejulning the br.gade on the road, arriving there August 22d, and on the 24th received two months' pay from Major Hempstead.


Marched from Tuscumbia September 8th, and arrived at Camp Clear Creek September 14th. Left Clear Creek on the morning of the 18th, and mnarched toward Juka. Miss. ; partiel- pated in the battle of luka on the 19th, where the army under Girneral Rosecrans defeated the enemy's forces under General Sterling Price. In this engagement Major JJohn Cromwell was taken prisoner. Followed the retreating army of the enemy one day and then returned to forinth, arriving there on the 3d of October, and took part In the battle of Corinth, October Su and 4th. In the engagement of the 3d the brave and hunored Colonel William A. Thrush was killed, while bravely leading hls command In a charge. Captain David De Wolf of Company K. was killed. Captain Harman Audrew's was severely wounded alle taken prisoner. The reglineat lost In this engagement thirty killed and over une hnudred wonuded.


After this rugagement the regiment nerompanled General Roseran'a army in pursuit of Price and Vanliorn's defeated army, Following them to Ripley, Mas, so closely ny tu cause them to abandon some of their artillery and nearly all their wagons


Ou the 14th of thetober the regiment returned with the army and encamped near corinth until November2d, when It marchew to tirand Junction. Tenn., and johned General Grant's expedition Into central Musslesigd. Marched to Uxfurd, Miss., with the army and returned to Grand function, Tenn., Jannary 1, 1863.


January 8th marched from tiram Junction, by way of Bull- var. Tenn., for l'orinth, where It arrived January 14th. Moved by rail from Corinth January 26, to Ridgeway Station, l'enn., where the regiment remained guarding the railroad, until March 12, when It marched to Memphis, Tenn., and embarked on board the steamer Empress, for the vicinity of Vicksburg. Remained near Helena, Arb,, ten days and again moved down the river, disembarklug un the 1st day of vurl at Duckport, twelve miles above Vicksburg. Here the duties of the men were of various kinds guard duty. loading and unloading steamboata, digging on a canal, and rontriving the best plans at their hands to keep from reposing in water at night.


In the 2d of May the regiment marched, with the arm), down the west alde of the Mississippi river, crosslug It at tirand Gulf, and with he Fifteenth Army Corps, then commanded by Cioneral Sherman, marched to Jackson, Stias., where, on the 14th day of May, 1863. H participated In the engagement which resulted in the rapture of the city. On the morning of the 16th way rear guard On leaving the city. Colonel Cromwell, then


commanding regiment, rode back to see if a detachment of troops. left behind to bring up atragglers, were doing their duty, when a body of rebel cavalrymen came up between him and his command and called on him to surrender, which he refused to do, and tried to escape, but was killed In the attempt. several bullets passing through his body.


The regiment participated in the charge on the enemy's works at Vicksburg. May 22dl, losing twelve men k Hed and quite a number wounded. During the siege of Vicksburg. Major John D. McClure recelved a severe wound and rarries the bullet in his taxly to-day.


On the 4th of June the regiment participated with the brigade under command of General Joseph A Mower, In the defeat of a force of the enemy at Mechanicsville, MIss., thirty mulles from Vicksburg, near the Yazoo river.


After the fall of Vicksburg. durlog the months of August, September and October, the regiment euraiprd al Hear Creek, twenty inlles east of Vicksburg.


In the middle of November, 1863, the regiment moved up the river to Memphis, Tenn,, and frost thence to Lagrange. Tenn., guarding the Memphis and Charleston line of railroad. A portion of the tine, however, was occupied scouting after the refel General Forrest's commiand.


On the 20th of January. 1564, left Lagrange and arrived at Merophis January, 25th.


February Ist, embarked on board steamer for Vicksinirg. where it arrived February 3d, and went Into camp at Black River Bridge, twelve milles from Vicksburg. February 434 marched to Canton, Miss. Returned to Black River March Su and to Vickabnig March 7 h. where It embarked, March 10th. on hard steamer Mars for the Red River Expedition. Was present at the capture of Fort De Russey, La., March 14th.


Participated In the battle of Pleasant Hill. La .. April 9th. 1964. During this expedition the regimeut was under ore several times, and suffered many very severe hardships.


On the 22d of May the regimeut arrived. With General Smith's command, at Vicksburg. havlog been for three months engaged In as tedious and fatiguing a campalgu as has ever Tallen to the lot of any ariny to undergo.


June 5th, the regiment embarked for Memphis, Moved up the river to Lake Chicot. disembarked, moved Inland and came in contact with a force of the enemy, under General Marmaduse. who was defeated and completely routed. Regiment Just In this engagement eleven wien killed and quite a number wounded. Major Mites received almost a fatal abot in the neck, and Cap- tain Biser was killed


The regiment then proceeded to Memphis and accompanied General J. A. Smith to Tupelu, Mi-s., with the exception of the men who had re-enlisted, humbering about one hundred, whu left the regiment at Moscow, Tenn,, and went to fillnols on Veteran furlough.


The veterans returned to the regiment on the 5th day of August, and with the regiment accompanied General \. J. Smith's expeditiun to Daford. Miss. Returned to Sletsphis, August 27. 1864. The original term of servlee of the regiment having expired, It was ordered to springfield, 111., where It was Anally discharged on the 11th of October. 1864.


The veterans and recrults of the regiment, numbering 196 men, irft Memphis September dd. 1864. under the command uf Llentenants Edward Houham and Royal Olinstead, accompany - Ing General Mower's expedition up White river, to Brownsville. Ark., and from there marched north into Missourl after the rebel General Price's artuy, which was raiding iu that state.


Arrived at Cape Girardeau, No. October 4th, and took steamer for Jefferson City October 6th, arriving at Jefferson ('Ity on the 15th; thence moved by rail to Utterville; thence marched to Warrensburg, where It arrived Oktober 26th. Left Warrensburg by rail, fur st. Louis, November 2d; arrived at St. Louis on the 4th. From st. Louis the veteran detachment was ordered to Chicago. 11. on the 9th of November. 1564. to assist in quelling any riot, should there be any on the day of election. Their services not being required, they were ordered to report to the Superintendent of Recruiting Service at Spring- feld, Ill., and were stationed at Camp Butler, where, on the :5th day of November, it received 200 drafted men, and a battalion of four full companies way organized, and Lieutenant Houham commissioned as Major and Lieutenant Olinstead cumulsluned as t'aptain of d'o. A. On the 3d day of December, the command wasordered to the feld, reporting by way of st. Louis, to General Rosecrans. At St. Louis the order was muliged and its desti- nation changed to Louisville, Ky. From here it was ordered to Bowling Green, Ky , where h rem ilned tilJanuary 27. 1565. when I moved by rall. to Nashville From Nashville, down the Cumberland and up the l'ennesspe river to Fastport, Miss .. where it rejutued Its old brigade- second Brigade.
