DIRECTORY OF COLUMBIA CITY
Columbia City, Indiana
COLUMBIA CITY, the capital of Whitley County, is a prosperous, modern city with over 4,000 population and it is located near the center of the county.
The beautiful city lays on the town site that was made on the 16th day of October, 1839. The lots that form the public square which now contains the hand- some stone structure, the Whitley county Court House that was erected in 1888, was presented by Elihu Chaun- cey, who was then a resident of Philadelphia.
On the first day of October, 1840, the present city was organized as a village in due form of law. It was called Columbia and the postoffice Whitley Court House. It was only a few years until the gain of population caus- ed an extension of limits. In 1853 Columbia was organ- ized as an incorporated town under laws of the state of Indiana. As the name of the town and the postoffice were different and as already there was a Columbia postoffice in the state, and election was called to decide upon a name for the new incorporated town. Columbia City an Beaver were the names considered, and the present name won out by a majority of three. The town continued its growth for a number of years, and on the third effort to recognize city government which was on the 12th day of September, 1887, was carried in the affirmative after a spirited fight. From that date it has continued to prosper as a city, and has made many needed and lasting im- provements.
Columbia City, while one of the smaller cities of the state, can truthfully boast of being one of the best lighted cities of the whole country, and owns its own electric light plant, which according to the reports of Superin- tendent Frank T. Schultz shows that it is more than self sustaining. There are lights at the street corners, and in the husiness and residence district they are strong while in the business part of the city are both satisfactory and attractive. Most of the business houses and residences are supplied with a current that is furnished at a reasonable rental.
The city also owns and operates its own waterworks which furnishes an abundant supply of cold, clear water from four wells at a depth of 280 feet through rock, which flows four and a half feet above the surface. The supply is forced through about twelve miles of mains by

two modern Worthington pumps, each having a capacity of a million gallons per day, and the supply has always been sufficient for the demand. The temperature of the water is fifty and one half degees Fahrenheit. It is oder- less, has no offensive taste, bright and sparkling and con- tains no suspended matter.
There are nearly one hundred fire hydrants located about the city on the street ocrners, and in case of fire, an extra pressure is applied so that the firemen have all the water they need to readily extinguish the hlaze.
Columbia City is a clean and well laid out city, even though it covers acres of ground. It is up-to-date in every way, and the residents enjoy all the modern improve- ments. It has double sewerage systems, which adds ma- terially to the health of the population. The principal streets are well paved with brick, there being over five miles of such thoroughfares. The sidewalks are all good, and the many shade trees add to the beauty of the during the spring, summer and fall months.
The business buildings are principally of modern style, many being of the late style brick. The new city hall on the west side of the magnificent stone court house. has just been completed, and is a credit to the city. It is not only fine in structure and convenient to the city of- ficials that have offices on the main floor, but accommo- dating to the public. There are rest rooms and toilets for both male and female in the basement, while on the upper floor there is a spacious hall for public meetings which is arranged to seat 1.200 people comfortably, be- side a stage for accommodation of the speakers.
The Commercial Club was organized a few years ago by the leading business men of the city to look after the welfare and the good of the public in the way of new enterprises and business ventures. H. B. Clugston, the present president, and Charles J. Eyanson. the secretary, are proving as proficient as their successors, and when any new proiect has their O. K. they can have hopes of meeting with success, but without this there will be nothing accomplished.
As a manufacturing center, Columbia City has the Harper Buggy Works, that still have large orders, and they now also make tops for large automobile manufac- turers, thus keeping up their pay roll to a goodly amount each month. The lumber business is one of the great in- dustries of the city, and the S. J. Peabody Mills employ . a small army of men. These mills rank with the leading concerns of the state, and ship Inmber to many states as well as to foreign countries. The Columbia Woolen Mills is an enterprise that has one hundred employees on the pay roll. The two large flouring mills, the overall factorv. the Vance Canning Factorv, brick and tile mills, pickle plant, bottling works, creamery, ice cream and broom

factrories are among the other industries.
The First National, Farmers Loan and Trust Co., and the Provident Trust Co., are the banking institutions, all reliable and each does a regular banking business. The stores in general are far above what is found in much larger cities. The Home Telephone Co., and the Farmers Mutual each have a large list of patrons and both connect with cities at a distance. The Post and the Commercial- Mail represent the press, each publishing daily evening papers except Sunday, also semi and weekly editions.
There are ten church edifices in the city, some being of elegant and of the latest design. Most have large rolls of membership.
Prof. C. E. Spaulding is the superintendent of the City Schools, and Prof. J. B. Holloway is the principal, they being assisted by a competent corps of teachers that instruct the nine hundred pupils in the two buildings in the west ward and the McLallen building on the South Side. The course is one that fits the students for the Practical duties of life. A good laboratory is of great as- sistance to high school students who are eligible to coll- ege freshman classes after graduating. The school board is composed of B. J. Bloom, F. J. Heller and Walpole Kaler.
A public library that is maintained by individuals that keep their names in secrecy is located in the Raupfer building, corner of Van Buren and Line streets. Mrs. Jessie Hunter-Faust is in charge of over 14,000 volumes, and makes thousands of loans annually. The late maga- zines and daily papers are found upon the tables, and are read daily by many callers.
The city officials are competent and obliging. Their offices are in the new hall just south of the New Clugston Hotel, and the officials are John W. Baker, Mayor; Ed- ward E. Erdmann, clerk; Reed Willits, treasurer; Coun- cilmen: C. E. Holderbaum, James Brown, John C. Pentz, Julius B. Leininger and Charles Schinbeckler. W. K. Gregg is the chief of police and street commissioner; Geo. O. Compton, city attorney; Frank T. Schultz, Supt. Electric Light and Waterworks: Henry Romey, Chief of Fire Department the board of health: Dr. D. S. Linvill, Dr. O. V. Schuman and Arthur Corse. Harry G. Bolling- er, city engineer. Night policemen Charles Fisher and Guy Spencer.
The fire department is competent and efficient. The large Seagrave motor truck that is kept in the rear of the new city hall, is in charge of John Edward Brown and Harry G. Gelvin, who are the only paid members, except Chief Henry E. Romey.
Columbia City can truthfully be termed one of the best business cities in Northern Indiana. Anyone desir- ing further information should call on or address the of- ficials of the Commercial Club.

If You Have Rheumatism
You would give almost anything to get rid of it, wouldn't you? And you know it won't get well by simply letting it run on. Rheumatism, like everything else, must have a cause, and you can't cure it until you remove that cause. But what is the use of spending hundreds of dollars at springs and health resorts, when for 50c you can obtain a box of Trusler's Rheumatic Tablets from any drug- gist, or 6 boxes which will be sufficient for the most obstinate case, for $2.50?
Trusler's Rheumatic Tablets remove all poison- ous waste from the bowels and kidneys, and give the blood a chance to build up the entire system.
