DIRECTORY OF CHURUBUSCO

Churubusco, Ind.

CHURUBUSCO is a thriving town located in . the northeast part of Whitley County in Smith township, and has a population of probably 1,200 inhabitants. The east corporate line is within a half mile of the Allen county line, and the Noble county border is only two miles north of the enterprising business place, thus the hustling busi- ness men many times have patrons of the three counties in their places at one time.

William B. Walker and David Craig settled on land in 1845 that was subsequently laid out and platted as the towns of Union and Franklin in about 1853, that part south of the railroad being known as Union and the north part Franklin .. When the first work was done on the Detroit, Eel River and Illinois railway, now known as the Panhandle system, it was then that the name of Chu- rubusco was adopted.

The town grew steadily after the building of the rail- road, and the business men of today are reliable and ac- commodating. The town has a splendid electric light plant and waterworks system that is owned by Miss Josie Kingdom, both being liberally patronized. The volunteer fire department, composed of engine, hose, hook and lad- der companies, responds to all calls so that the town has never experienced any great conflagrations.

The saw mill industry and the Fisk manufacturing company furnish employment for a large force of work- men. The Exchange bank, owned and operated by O. Gandy & Co., and the Farmers State Bank, are the finan- cial institutions. The O. Gandy & Co. own and operate the grain elevators, and are interested at South Whitley, Arcola, and over the state, they being engaged in real es- tate, as well as other business.

In Smith township, in which Churubusco is situated, the first church society of the county was organized in the year 1838, being of Methodist denomination. Today Churubusco has three church buildings, the Methodist, I'nited Brethren and Baptist, and each has a good mem- bership.

The schools are ranked in first place and are in charge of a competent corps of teachers. The leading secret societies are all represented and each order has a goodly number of the leading people enrolled.
