DIRECTORY OF SOUTH WHITLEY
South Whitley, Ind.
SOUTH WHITLEY, originally Springfield, is the old- est town of the county, it having been laid out in the fall of 1838. It is the second largest town in Whitley County, having a population of about 1,400. It is located in the southwest part of the County, in what is known as the Eel River Valley. The country surrounding the town is as good farming land as can be found in the state of Indiana.
The land which is now a part of South Whitley was entered by Henry S. Gohin on the 15th day of October, 1835. It was sold on the 16th day of July, 1839, to Jos- eph Parrett, Jr., who very soon afterwards platted the original town site of Springfield, it containing ten lots. Mr. Parrett erected the first hotel and it was of hewen logs. His geniality caused many travelers to stop with him. Corn bread, potatoes and wild game generally con- stituted the bill of fare.
The postoffice was at the first named South Whitley, and soon the town became known by the same name, but was not legally changed until it was incorporated in the early part of the year 1894. The first postmaster was David D. Parrett, and the mail was then carried from Lagro through South Whitley to Columbia City by private conveyance. William Fox is the present postmaster and is most accommodating to the patrons and public.
The business men are wide-awake and enjoy a very liberal patronage. They have the advantage of the Pan- handle and Nicked Plate railways, and are able to directly reach many of the leading markets of the world.
The manufacturing concerns are the Grip Nut Mills, Stave and Heading Mills, Saw Mills, Machine Shops, Overall Factor and the Creamery that help furnish em- ployment to the people of the vicinity.
The town has a good waterworks plant and sewerage system. The mercantile branches are well looked after by able and competent men. The town, has two banks, and O. Gandy & Co., who operate one, pay out large sums for grain and seeds at home as well as at otherpoints. The schools are as good as can be found anywhere, and are in charge of a competent corps of teachers. The town has three churches-the Methodist, Baptist and United Brethren-all with good congregations.
The town is also fully blessed with secret societies, and a stranger can always find a friend in the enterpris- ing town.
