DIRECTORY OF LARWILL

Larwill, Ind.

LARWILL, the capital of Richland township, was laid out on the line of the Pittsburg, Fort Wayne and Chicago railway, in November, 1854, and was first known as Huntsville. From the first there was confusion about receiving mail matter, as there was at that time a Huntsville postoffice in the state. The board of commis- sioners, on March 8th, 1866, officially changed the name from Huntsville to Larwill. The postoffice that had been located at Summit, one mile west was moved to Larwill when the railroad reached that point.

The first store was opened by Dodge & McLallen, and the stock was of a varied assortment, composed of a little of everything, but was to suit the times. The town con- tinued to grow, and at one time, in the early '70's, was the best trading point in the county.

There is no manufacturing industries, and the mer- chants who have for years been prosperous on account of the strictest care and prudence, depend upon the farming trade. The bank that was established there some ten years ago, and now under the direction of Alfred Young, is a great help to the business men and the general puo- lic of that vicinity.

The public schools that are always under the direc- tion of a competent corps of instructors, furnishes a high school course, and many students go from there to the colleges to complete their work for actual life.

Larwill has four church buildings, the Methodist, Baptist, Wesleyan and Free Methodist. All are substan- tial and each congregation has a good membership.

Larwill has no fire department, but the bucket bri- gade generally does good work.
