INDIANAPOLIS : COMPILED AND PUBLISHED BY R. L. POLK & CO. CARLON & HOLLENBECK, PRINTERS AND BINDERS. 1886.

Entered according to an act of Congress, in the year 1886, by R. L. Polk & Co., in the office of the Librarian of Congress, Washington, D. C.

INTRODUCTORY.

The thirty-first volume of the Indianapolis city directory is here- with presented to its patrons. Including the suburban villages, the names of whose residents the present publishers have always incorpora- ted in the directory, this volume contains, exclusive of firms, the names of 45,012 persons, 3,444 of which are colored and. 3,362 widows.

The miscellaneous directory-pages 41 to 95-embraces 887 different societies, schools, etc., thus making this portion of the book a true reflex of the social, religious and educational advantages of the city.

In the classified directory-pages 767 to 840-are 448 different head- ings, showing that Indianapolis is fully represented in nearly all trades, professions and pursuits.

During the canvass, which was mostly made in the last month of 1885, the number of vacant residences, stores, etc., was found to be 1,384. These vacant premises were again visited in January of the pres- ent year, when 609 were found occupied.

The directory for 1885 had a total of 740 pages; the present edi- tion has 840, a gain of 100 pages over the last issue.

The publishers have used their best endeavors to make the present volume a worthy representative of the capital city of the State; and would thank the business public for support extended.

THE TURKISH BATH-WHAT DOES IT DO ? It cleanses the skin and removes all effete matter that accumulates upon its surface. It opens the pores and establishes a healthy action of the per- spiratory tubes. It removes from the blood the impurities which cause disease. It renders the skin less susceptible to changes of weather. It promotes absorption and removal from the system of super- finons deposits that have accumulated in the tissnes. It strengthens and toughens the tissues of the whole body, greatly lessening the llability to disease. It soothes nnd strengthens the nerves. pro- motes sleep und preserves the health. It aids digestion and assimilation, and tends to establish a healthy action of all the organs of the body. Many of the most noted physicians in Europe and in this country recognize the remedial powers.

TO THE LADIES-The Bath is partleularly valuable. It materially aids the lungs in the process of decarbonizing the blood and supplying it with oxygen. It improves the complexion and is supe- rior as a cosmetic, making the countenance fresh and rosy, and leaving behind no deleterious effects. It is not only a positive curative agent, but a great luxury and health preservative, and should be taken frequently in this malarial climate.

Indianapolis Steam Boiler Cleaning Co., FOR LAND AND MARINE BOILERS.

H. H. KREAMER:Dear Sir-This is to certify that I have used your Scale Purgative, and I must ad- mit that after an experience of eleven years in and about steam boilers, I have found nothing that has given greater satisfaction than the substance I have used in my steam boilers. After using it five weeks it has cleaned my boilers to my greatest satisfaction, and I cheerfully recommend this Scale Purgative to all that have steam boilers in use, as nothing has come to my attention that will answer the purpose as well as the Scale Purgative. My boilers are clean and clear from all scales; and I use lime stone water. This is the greatest saving I have ever seen, and saves time and labor, because you are not obliged to chip your boilers, and as I have full knowledge of chipping boilers, I am glad that science has so far progressed as to dispense with such a slaving labor. Use the Scale Purgative. Respectfully yours, ALLEN SCHWEYER, Miner of Iron Ore in Five Mines.
