The Best Stave Machine ever invented. CAPABLE OF CUTTING FIVE THOUSAND STAVES IN AN HOUR.
This newly patented Machine excels all previous inventions for the same object, in the quantity and superiority of its work. The number of Staves it will cut in any given titne, is limited only by the ability of the tender to feed it. The construction of the Machine is very simple. The knives are inserted in a revolving cylinder, about the size of the barrel for which the staves are designed. The timber is placed on a permanent platform inside the revolving cylinder, and at whatever speed it runs, the knives cut two Staves every revolution, while they are fed.
The Machine is also provided with two end cutters, which cut off each end of the Stave, leaving it smooth and square at the end, and of any desired length. The timber is not fed to this Machine by hand, as is the case with all others, but it is provided with two iron dogs, which are operated by a crank on the outside, which presses the timber up firmly to the knives, and insures the operation of the end cutters, and also insures a more uniform thickness of Staves than can be attained by any other Machine. With three or four horse power, and three hands to attend the Machine, from 1,000 to 5,000 Staves can be cut every hour it is run. The Ma- chine makes a beautiful smooth Stave of exactly uniform size-square at both ends. It can be adjusted to cut of any thickness. Machines can be furnished of a size to ent Staves for tobacco, sugar, and other large hogsheads. The strokes of the knives check the timber much less than in other Machines, and very slightly disturb its grain.
The following reasons constitute some of its claims to public patronage:
Ist. This Machine is simple, substantial and durable, and in no way likely to get out of order. 24. It is compact-occupying but a small space of from four to six feet. 34. Being rotary in its movements, it does not require more than half the power of a reciprocating Machine to do the same amount of work. &c., &c.
