HISTORY OF THE
FIFTY SEVENTH INFANTRY REGIMENT, INDIANA VOLUNTEERS.
MUSTERED FOR THREE YEARS.
The Fifty Seventh Regiment was recruited in the 5th and IIth Congressional Districts, mainly through the efforts of Reverend J. W. T. McMullen and Rev- erend Franklin A. Hardin, and was mustered into the service on the 18th of November, 1861, at Richmond, Indiana. On the 10th of December the regiment moved to Indianapolis, where it remained until December 23d, when, its organiza- tion having been completed, it went to Louisville, Kentucky, and reported to General Buell. Here it was assigned to the Sixth Division of the Army of the Ohio, then organizing at Bardstown, Kentucky, to which place the regiment marched. Soon afterward it moved to Lebanon, Kentucky, and on the 12th of February, 1862, it was sent by rail to Mumfordsville, Kentucky, and from thence marched to Nashville, Tennessee, arriving there early in March. Although par- ticipating in no engagements, the Winter campaign in Kentucky had been very severe, and the regiment suffered a great depletion.
After remaining at Nashville for some time, resting, refitting and drilling, the regiment started for Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee, on the 21st of March, 1862; the Army of the Ohio being ordered to join General Grant. It was within

hearing of the battle of Shiloh, on the 6th of April, but did not arrive on the field until the afternoon of the 7th. It soon became actively engaged, but suffered only a slight loss. During the Siege of Corinth the regiment was actively employed. After the evacuation of that place, it marched into North Alabama, where it re- mained until about the middle of July, 1862, when it marched again into Middle Tennessee. Until the retreat to Louisville, which began about the Ist of Sep- tember, 1862, the regiment remained on duty in Middle Tennessee, near Tullahoma and McMinnville, suffering but few casualties, but making many arduous marches, and undergoing severe hardships. During the campaign against Bragg, in Kentucky, it took an active part, engaging in the battle of Chaplin Hills, or Perry- ville, suffering only a slight loss. After the pursuit of Bragg was discontinued, the regiment marched for Nashville again, which place it reached about the Ist of December, 1862.
It remained at Nashville during the month of December, being frequently engaged in skirmishes with the enemy while guarding foraging trains. At the battle of Stone's River the Fifty Seventh suffered severely, losing 75 men out of about 350 engaged. In this battle the regiment greatly distinguished itself. It was attached to the left wing of the army which withstood the rebel assaults on the first day of the battle. Colonel Hines and Lieutenant Colonel Lennard were severely wounded, and the regiment lost some of its best men among the killed. During the remainder of the Winter and the Spring of 1863, it remained in camp near Murfreesboro, drilling constantly, and doing very severe picket duty. It took part in the "eleven days' scout" of Major General Reynolds, to McMinn- ville, in the month of April, but was not in any engagement. On the 24th of June the regiment broke camp and participated in the campaign against Tulla- homa. After the Confederates evacuated Middle Tennessee, the regiment re- mained in camp near Pelham, in the Elk River Valley, until the 16th of August. During the campaign which resulted in the capture of Chattanooga and the battle of Chickamauga, General Wagner's Brigade, to which the Fifty Seventh was attached, operated on the north side of the Tennessee, opposite Chattanooga. On the evacuation of that place, Wagner's Brigade crossed the river and took pos- session. On the 5th of September Colonel Lennard was assigned as Provost Marshal of the town, and the regiment was placed on duty as provost guard. From this duty it was relieved a few days before the battle of Missionary Ridge, in which action it bore a conspicuous part.
At the re-organization of the Army of the Cumberland, subsequent to the battle of Chickamauga, the Fifty Seventh was assigned to Sheridan's (Second) Division of the Fourth Corps. Sheridan's division formed a part of the column sent to the relief of General Burnside at Knoxville immediately after the battle of Missionary Ridge. The campaign in East Tennessee during the Winter of 1863 and 1864, was probably unequaled during the whole war for hardships and privations ; of these the Fifty Seventh suffered a full share. On the Ist of January, 1864, the regiment almost unanimously re-enlisted as a veteran organi- zation, but did not return to Indiana on veteran furlough until March. Upon the expiration of its veteran furlough the regiment rejoined the Fourth Corps on the 5th of May, and took part in the initial operations of the campaign against Atlanta.

HAZZARD'S HISTORY OF HENRY COUNTY.
It was severely engaged in an assault upon the enemy's works on Rocky Face Ridge, near Dalton, Georgia, May 9th, and suffered some loss. At Resaca, Colonel Lennard, a most brave and accomplished officer, was killed. In this battle the Fifty Seventh took an active part, also in the action near Adairsville, on the evening of the 17th of May. In the engagement which took place May 25th, near New Hope Church on the Alatoona Mountains, the regiment took position in front of the enemy in the evening, but was not engaged until May 27th, when it lost severely. It was under fire every day from this time until June 3d, losing many men. In the terrible struggles around Kenesaw, and especially in the deadly skirmishing, it bore a full part. Lieutenant Beitzell was killed on the 18th, and Captain Stidham and Lieutenant Callaway on the 23d of June. In the assault of the 27th of June the regiment, then commanded by Colonel Willis Blanch, formed the skirmish line in front of the assaulting column of the Fourth Corps; its loss was heavy. At the battle of Peach Tree Creek, on the 20th of July, the regiment was again on the skirmish line, but suffered only a slight loss. From this time until the 25th of August, the regiment lay in the trenches in front of Atlanta. It was slightly engaged in the battle of Jonesboro, August 31st ; Lieu- tenant Charles W. T. Minesinger was here mortally wounded.
Soon after the occupation of Atlanta, our communications being threatened, the division to which the Fifty Seventh belonged was sent to Chattanooga. It took part in the operations which resulted in driving Hood into Alabama, and afterward formed a part of the army commanded by General Thomas, which resisted the Confederate invasion of Tennessee. The regiment was engaged at Franklin on the 30th of November, 1864, where it sustained a very severe loss, especially in prisoners ; Captain Dunn was killed in this fight. It also participated in the battle of Nashville, on the 15th and 16th of December. Colonel Blanch was wounded here, but the losses of the regiment were not very severe. After the pursuit of Hood's army the regiment lay in camp at Huntsville, Alabama, some months, moving into East Tennessee as far as Bull's Gap in April, 1865. It then went to Nashville, where it remained until July, and then was transferred to Texas. It remained in service in the latter State until November, 1865.
The Fifty Seventh saw much arduous service, its losses in battle were heavy and its marches especially severe, having crossed the entire breadth of the State of Kentucky three times, and of Tennessee six times. It behaved with great gal- lantry on every occasion, and achieved an enviable record and an honorable fame. It was peculiarly fortunate in its commanding officers. Colonel McMullen re- mained with the regiment but a short time, but Colonel Hines, his successor, who principally formed its character, was an officer of great and acknowledged ability. Colonels Lennard and Blanch were also soldiers of distinguished merit .. Colonel John S. McGraw, an experienced officer, was in command of the regiment when it was mustered out, December 14, 1865.
This regiment bore an honorable part in the following engagements :
Shiloh, Tennessee
