LA PORTE
Population, 15,000. County seat of La Porte county, located 59 miles east of Chicago, on the New York Central Lake Erie & Western and Pere Mar- quette Railways; also connected by electric lines with Chicago, Gary, Michigan City, South Bend and all in- termediate points. La Porte has a wide reputation as the most beautiful city in the Middle West. A lake coun- try of rare picturesqueness lies ad- jacent to the city. It is also situated in the heart of a rich agricultural and -horticultural country. The farms in La Porte county number 2,700, the value of which is $30,000,000 and more. The city is rich in beautiful homes and lawns, beautifully paved and
shaded streets and substantial public buildings, schools and churches and business blocks and all modern im- provements, which reflect the enter- prise and progressive spirit of its peo- ple. The first cabins were built in 1830 by Richard Harris and George Thomas on the present location of the city. The land on which now stands the city of La Porte was purchased in 1831 at the Logansport sale by Walter
Wilson, Hiran Todd, John Walker, James Andrew and A. P. Andrew, Jr. The first school was built in 1833. The first newspaper was La Porte County Whig, in 1838. La Porte now has 2 daily and weekly newspapers, The Ar- gus and The Herald, 5 banks, churches of all leading denominations, good schools, 1 hospital, 30 manufacturing plants, 25 miles sewerage, 15 miles paved streets, electric and gas light- ing systems. Principal productions are heavy farm machinery, woolen goods. pianos, picture frames, bicycles, furni- ture, live stock, grain, produce, dairy products and poultry. Exp., American, Adams and Wells, Fargo & Co. Tel., W. U. and Postal. Telephone connec- tion. James Terry, postmaster.
