Population, 22,000. An incorporated city, located on the southeastern mar- gin of Lake Michigan, in LaPorte county, 12 miles northwest of LaPorte, the county sest, and 52 east of Chicago. Michigan City is served by the Michi- gan Central, Lake Erie & Western, Pere Marquette and Monon steam railways, the Chicago, Lake Shore & South Bend and Chicago, South Bend & Northern Indiana electric lines, and by the In- diana Transportation Co, steamship line. An adequate system of local street cars is also operated. Michi- gan City was founded in October, 1832, by Isaac C. Elston and associates.
