MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION
HISTORICAL
MISHAWAKA
This thriving city is located on the St. Joseph River in the county of the same name, and on the C. & G. T. and New York Central Lines and C. S. B. & N. I. (Electric) R. R. southeast of South Bend, Indiana. It has all the features of a modern, wide-awake city, including churches of the leading denominations, educational advantages of the highest class, water works, fire and police de- partments, electric light, paved streets, sewerage system, 5 banks and trust com- panies with capital and surplus of $615,- 000, and deposits of $5,756,000, a weekly and a monthly newspaper, a packing house and a brass foundry. Among the manufactures are shoes, rubber boots, iron beds, aluminum castings, machine tools, power and transmission machinery, gasoline engines, window screens, gal- vanized tanks, rubber, windmills and plows.
The germ from which the city of Mish- awaka sprang was the town of St. Joseph Iron Works, which was located on the south side of the St. Joseph River. It was laid out by Almonson M. Hurd, who is generally regarded as the founder of the city of Mishawaka. The name of the town was taken from that of a company of the same name organized by Mr. Hurd and others for the manufacture of iron from bog ore, which was found in con- siderable quantities in "the swamp just south of town." The town was incor- porated January 31, 1835, and five town trustees were elected.
