There were three other independent towns. Mishawaka, "Barbee's Addition," also on the south side of the river, joined the "Original Town" on the east. The third, "Fowler's Addition to Mishawaka," was on the north side of the river oppo- site St. Joseph Iron Works. Indiana City, also on the north side of the river and west of the latter addition, was laid out June 28, 1836, and acknowledged by the proprietors, Joseph Battell and Law- rence Grove Lawrence.
By an act of the legislature, approved February 17, 1838, all of these towns and their several additions were united into one municipality and christened "Mish- awaka." From the reincorporation and union of the towns the people continued to live under a town government for a period of 64 years. But, as the town grew in population, and as new and di- versified interests manifested themselves with the years, the people prepared to take upon themselves the obligation and secure the advantages of a city form of government. Accordingly, on January 23, 1899, a petition was presented to the board of town trustees, asking for the incorporation of the town of Mishawaka as a city. At the election, held February 20, 1899, to determine the question of in- corporation, 702 voted for incorporation and 336 against it. The board divided the new city into five wards, the present number, and ordered notice to be given for the election of city officers on the first Tuesday of May, the same being May 2, 1899. The board of town trustees met for the last time May 8, 1899, closed up town affairs, then turned the govern- ment over to the newly elected officers and adjourned sine die.
St. Joseph Iron Works was incorpor- ated in 1835, when the population of the town was 328. When the several towns and additions were united under the name of Mishawaka in 1838, the popula- tion was 756. The population each dec- ade since, as shown by the United States census reports, follows: 1840, 1,166; 1850, 1,412; 1860, 1,498; 1870, 2,617: 1880, 2,640; 1890, 3,375; 1900, 5,500; 1910, 11,908; 1920, 15,195; but the federal census was taken in January, 1920, or nearly two years prior to the enumeration for this Di- rectory, and only included the inhab- itants within the corporate limits, where- as the enumeration for this Directory included the suburban districts about and adjoining Mishawaka, as the rest- dents of those districts are identical in

There are 7,023 names in the Mishawaka Directory, and applying the multiple 212, which is found conservative, to account for wo- men and children who are not enumer- ated, it is ascertained that the popula- tion for the territory covered by the canvass is 17,547.
