POLK'S

South Bend Street and Avenue Guide and Directory of Householders 1921

By the decimal system of numbering, one hundred numbers are allotted to each square. The center of the city for street numbering purposes is at the junction of Washington avenue and Michigan stret. Streets running north and south are numbered north and south from Washington avenue, while those running east and west are numbered east and west from Michigan street. The numbers begin with 101 and alternate from one side of the street to the other. Each square begins with an additional hundred; thus 101, 201, 301, etc. In some instances the blocks are longer, there being no intersecting street, and the numbers then run higher. The odd numbers are on the north side of the streets running east and west, and on the west side of streets running north and south. All other streets not com- mencing at Washington avenue or Michigan street are numbered in accordance with this system.
