COURSE OF INSTRUCTION
Book-Keeping by Double Entry.
A complete mastery of the Science of Accounts is a great desideratum with those purposing to fit themselves for Mercantile Life. Such advantages are here afforded for acquiring that practical and scientific knowledge as cannot fail to insure success, in assuming the various responsibilities of Accountantship, in any and every department of business. In place of the plan heretofore practiced of placing before the uninitiated, a mass of complicated entries with- out connection, and based on business operations and instruments, of which he has no concep- tion, and concerning which the rules given have often no application, the Student, by a series of easy and induptive steps, (a process new and original with the Principal,) is gradually advanced, at a great saving of time and labor, to a full comprehension of the subject, on true philosophical principles, from the most simple to the most complicated transactions, according to those forms adopted in the best Business Houses, in the various departments of Trade, Commerce and Manufactures, Wholesale, Retail, Commission, Forwarding and Receiving, Jobbing, Shipping, Insurance, Banking, Manufacturing, Steamboat, Railroad, Individual, Partnership, Joint-Partnership Business, Speculations in Company, &c., &c., including those improved and abbreviated Forms for abridging labor, ased in large Shipping, Forward- ing, and Receiving, Commission Houses, &c. Thus, in whatever department of Commerce the Graduate of this Institution may embark, or whatever duties as an Accountant he may be called upon to perform, he will not find himself unfamiliar with new forms, or be at a loss in practically applying his knowledge to the best advantage to the exigencies of any particular case.
Penmanship.
A good hand writing is justly deemed a passport to Mercantile success. The skilful Pen- man uniformly obtains the preference to all places of business of trust. The opportunities afforded at this Institution, in this Department, are a matter of no minor consideration to those who contemplate completing a course of Commercial Studies. Instruction in this art is given separately, or in connection with other branches.
Commercial Calculations.
A thorough knowledge of Business Computations, including all the higher, as well as the ordinary Branches, is imparted to the Student, according to the most accurate and rapid methods. Interest, Discount, Exchange, Equation of Payments, &c.
Mercantile Correspondence.
Regular exercises are given in the art of writing Business Forms and Business Letters, as connected with the different Branches of Trade, including Bills of Exchange, Notes, Bills, Invoices, Accounts Current, Sales, &c.
Commercial Lectures.
Daily Lectures are given on Commercial Law, by the Principal, and others of acknowledged ability, together with the general laws of Trade, Including the laws of Exchange, the laws and history of Money, Banking, Commerce, &c. These Lectures, a feature first introduced by the Principal of the Institution are deemed of the first importance to the Mercantile Student.
