The high reputation this furnace has acquired. in the use of more than twenty thousand, places it pre-eminently ahead of any other known plan for thoroughly and economi- cally warming buildings. The cuts of the brick or portable furnaces will show at a glance to any intelligent mind the won- derful heating powers, a cluster of tapering Radi- ators standing directly over the fire, must have over any other form of heating surface, and which is so constructed as to be perfectly gas and smoke tight. Any one in want of a furnace should not fail of thoroughly exam- ining this furnace.

Special attention given to putting up furnaces and Ranges, and the ven- tilation of buildings in every part of the coun try.

PREFACE.

THE Directory of New Bedford is again presented to our patrons, and those having occasion to use it. The difficulty of compiling a City Directory can hardly be understood, and is not easily explained ; yet we believe the Directory for 1873-4 is more nearly correct than any of its predecessors.

This year's Directory contains 7,812 names, and on the basis, which has been found to be nearly correct, of 312 persons to each name, gives a population of 23,436.

More changes, both in residences and places of business, have been made within the past two years, than in the same time since our connection with the publication of the work.

The Directory contains a great amount of information concerning the public, religious, charitable and private institutions of the city, which makes it a valuable present record as well as an historical authority.

Every person should have at his place of business, or at his house, a Directory, not only as a daily convenience, but also as a valuable record of local history.

An examination of the Business Department shows the steady growth of our industries, and gives the most encouraging prospects for the future.
