The Mercantile Agency,
FOR THE PROMOTION AND PROTECTION OF TRADE.
Established by LEWIS TAPPAN in New York, A. D. 1841, by LEWIS TAP- PAN and EDWARD E. DUNBAR in Boston, A. D. 1842, and since then in undernamed Cities of this country, Canada, and Europe.
BOSTON OFFICE,
Merchants' Exchange Building,' 51 State St.
Worcester Office, No. 452 Main St.
Portland Office, No. 88 Exchange St.
This Institution has enjoyed for more than thirty years the confidence and patronage of the leading Bankers and Merchants of New York and Boston, and has acquired that of all live business men in other cities of this country and British Possessions and the Eastern Continent, as they have become acquainted with it by the successive establishment of Branch offices in their midst.
Originally established with the view to give to subscribers simply details as to the char- acter, responsibility, and trustworthiness of those to whom they were called on to sell goods, two other features were added some years ago. One, the Collection of Overdue Claims. The other, The Mercantile Ageney Reference Book.
For collection of debts the Agency has superior facilities.
The Reference Book, wherever seen, recommends itself and the offices that jointly pre- pare and issue it, yet no one who uses it has probably any idea of the amount of money and labor employed in the collection of the information which forms the basis for each issue of the Reference Book. Its general accuracy testifies to the care bestowed upon the work and the facilities acquired for its production, while the system of ratings adopted-severing as it does the property qualification and presenting that by the side of the credit rating-is eminently useful and satisfactory, while it is at same time a constant challenge to adverse criticism.
