Jarvis Slade, Israel Lombard, Zelotes Hosmer, of Finance. Robert B. Forbes, George B. Upton, Charles O. Whitmore, William Perkins, Lewis W. Tappan, of Inquiry into Causes of Shipwrecks. Isaac C. Bates, Secretary. Office 9 Merchants Exchange.
By the annual report of the Secretary and Treasurer, the Board is in a flourishing condition. The consideration of various important subjects, which have been before the Association and its Direct- ors during the short time of its existence, has not been without useful results. These subjects are, in brief - Inquiry into Causes of Shipwrecks, Revenue Laws, Dr. Kane's Expedition, Circulation of Boston Newspapers in the Western States, Usury Laws, Bankrupt Laws, Transport of Merchandise, and the Reciprocity Treaty with the British North American Provinces.
The Board of Trade was incorporated in April, 1854, " for the purpose of promoting trade and commerce in the city of Boston and its vicinity." These terms are understood, in their largest extent, as embracing the interests of all the great divisions of human labor. It is designer to make these interests subjects of serious examination and report, as suitable opportunity may offer ; more im- mediate attention being given to seeking redress for existing grievances, and to the attainment of any objects presented, involving the general interests of trade, which it might be difficult to attain by separate and individual exertion. The Government of the Board is understood to represent, and to be the efficient exponent, of the wishes of its members. The report contains the names of 576 of our principal merchants belonging to the Association, engaged in every branch of commerce, and repre- senting the first business houses in the city.

The Directors in their report, May 1, 1855, state the assets of the Company, (there being no debt) at $967,997.22, of which $937,191.59 is in real estate, the value of the land as estimated in 1851. This is equivalent to $48.35 on each share of the Company. The report of the Treasurer, Wm. C. Barstow, Esq., makes the account of real estate stand precisely as it did at the time of the previous report. The number of buildings erected during the year is as follows : Dwelling houses 147, of which 9 are of brick ; 9 stores, of which 6 are of brick, five stories high, and of fine architectural appearance ; twelve mechanic and machine shops; ten stables, two steam sawmills, 1 stone ware- house, one brick oil factory, one freight house, on the Grand Junction wharf, 60 feet by 200, and one elegant brick church. Notwithstanding this large increase in dwelling houses, the report states that it is with much difficulty that a house can be obtained on a lease, an evidence that the resident population is increasing fast, and which at this time is estimated at not less than 16,000.
