Since the previous report, 28 ships (not including those now on the stocks) with an aggregate ton- nage of 37,987 tons have been built in East Boston. In this connection the report alludes to the great facilities which exist at East Boston for repairing vessels.
The report speaks of the improvements made by the city on the streets during the year, and also those made by the Company, and then states that judging from present appearances the Company will soon derive some benefit from the working of the Grand Junction Railroad. A' cady the freight trains over this road begin to give evidence of what may soon be expected. With this increase in business, a corresponding increase in population and in demand for building lots is anticipated.

All births, marriages, and deaths which now take place in the city, are required to be returned to this office, to be recorded, with such particulars in regard to each as the law requires.
It is important that this law should be strictly carried into effect ; to the public, that the health and condition of the population may be known; and to every individual, that evidence may be furnished by the records of the three great events of life-birth, marriage, and death. Great personal inconve- nience and pecuniary loss have often arisen from want of this evidence.
The city is canvassed in May, and again in January, in order to collect the proper information concerning children born during the year.
During the year 1854, five thousand six hundred and eighty-eight births were registered.
Intentions of marriage of three thousand three hundred and twenty-nine couples were entered, and certificates issued, and three thousand one hundred and twenty-eight marriages were recorded.
Four thousand four hundred and forty-one deaths, which occurred within the limits of the city, during the same period, were registered.
