Report of the Pastor.
The time has come ance more for the annual report au the state of religion in our community. Such a report, made in any year, from the birth of Our Load on to the end of the world, could be a pessimistic plaint 1 . a long and Imary recital of defeats and disappointments, hopes dashed and tears realized. Such a report would only to move that the writer lacked a sense of pro- portion, that the community had insisted an remaining are more year in its normal condition, half an eye on the class and! both feet firmly planted in the wind. In other words that report would reflect the normal spiritual conclution of any Community at any time. The causes for despair are always-move numerano than To causes for rejoicing.
say this my way of introduction because and have just could through one of tens leve encouraging years. The young people wurde flow suffered temporary halibut. It will be arrived againces soon as the way seems clear. Our Sunday ferroal is not doing as well as it should.
203
It has suffered this year more than ever from the lack of devoted leadership. I do not hesitate a moment to pay tribute to those few young women who have given generously their time, and what is more important, their thought. But they have been, and are, too few. One of the matters which I shall recommend to the alleation of the standing Committee is the condition of our religious education
In my report last year I mentioned the decline, in church attendance and attempted to analyze some of the possible reasons. apparently my attempt was too meals for attendance has continued to fall. The quetage for 1942 mas 48. how will mention two causes for rejoicing. first out benevolence giving has increased markedly. This increase is clue primarily to the number of you who have recently beginn making a small gift in envelope every week. I hope you will all be able to do that more and more, in greater numbers and in greater amounts. It is sorely needed. You have heard too from the treasured" report that our financial condition is on the whale good.
the other cause for rejoicing is the relationship with the church in fol- land which is growing up through the services of your minister. I hope this association may become closer as the years feass. It can be a real source ofstrength the beatles churches.
In this year of 1 943, we are going to have hard times, in the church is less than elsewhere, The demands of the man situation will make it increasingly difficult for all churches, but particularly those in the country where so many must drive in order to allend. It is
204
well to remind you now that the last under of the OP a drastically reducing the number of legitimate uses of the car, still maintains that attendance at church is an essential use of the car and not merely a matter of personal pleasure. But even to, www have not seen the worst yet. There will be more restrictions and we must be prepared to face them. So far as Que support of the church is concerned This means that a greater responsibility will fall on the shoulders of those with live within walking distance. It i saus too that those who areable to chaine imust make inusual efforts to see that we are, remains of houd aring to lack of transportation if it is possible to living here in The new situation also brings from the necessity of developing a phase of Clanstripu. life which has been widely targa ten and vadly neglected in recent years, the Cliristian family. Of this Ishell are much to say inthe coming months. finally, in the day of trouble, be strong; in the child days, he serene; at all times he firm in your faith. The world weeks you.
