REPORT OF BOARD OF PUBLIC WELFARE

To His Honor the Mayor &

Members of the City Council

This detailed report of the Board of Public Welfare for the year, 1954, covering cost of Aid to Dependent Children, Disability Assistance, and General Relief is herein submitted.

The gross cost of operating these programs is broken down as follows: General Relief: $45,165.67; Aid to Dependent Children: $79,817.76; Disability Assistance: $31,942.71, for a Total of $156,926. 14. This Total includes medical, medicine, hospitalization, nursing & boarding home care. These costs are substantial.

Reimbursement received from the Federal, State and Other Cities and Towns, total - $97,681.96, leaving the net cost to the city of Newburyport as $59,244.18.

Only a nominal increase in case load was experienced, because of curtailed production in some industries, because most of those affected qualified for unemployment benefits. What will happen when these benefits are exhausted is unpredictable.
