The major share of silverware manufactured in the United States is fabricated in New England, and Newburyport was among the towns to under- take early sterling silver production until today it constitutes a very im- portant part of the industrial life of the community.

As early as 1690, William Moulton was established in business as a silversmith in that part of Newbury now included within the limits of Newburyport. For seven successive generations this family of Moultons carried on the business of silversmiths in Newburyport.

Anthony F. Towle and William P. Jones, apprentices of Joseph Moulton, in 1857, set up a small silversmithing shop under the name of Towle & Jones.

Messrs. A. F. and Edward B. Towle, under the firm name of A. F. Towle & Son, leased a factory, which they occupied until 1880 when they organ- ized the Towle Manufacturing Company, and began the manufacture of silverware on a large scale in a brick building on Merrimac Street. Three years later, the brick factory, erected in 1866 by the Merrimac Arms and Manufacturing Company, was bought and has since been occupied by the Towle Company.

With the inspiration flowing from this historic background, the Towle Manufacturing Company carried on its work in sterling silver, maintaining a leadership in solid silver tableware of colonial, classic and modern styles in keeping with the finest traditions of this historic "Queen of Metals."
