During 1963 the Librarian attended several meetings as a member of the planning board of the Regional Public Library representing the Merrimack Valley Library Association, and was a member of the panel discussion at the fall meeting of the assoc- iation held in Methuen.

Steps achieved in long-range improvements to the library in 1963, included the painting of the walls and ceilings of the main circulation room and second floor alcoves of the front balcony, the refinishing of balcony floors, the washing and varnishing of all woodwork in the front of the building, also painting of the office. Venetian blinds were installed in all circulation room windows, and across the front of the balcony. These reno- vations offer a greatly improved appearance.

Additional shelving is urgently needed to alleviate crowded book shelves and to function more efficiently. The sum of $1500 voted by the Library Directors for this purpose was included in the Library budget submitted for 1964.

It would be impossible to close without an expression of sincere gratitude to the Library Directors for their careful planning of long-range improvements and to the Mayor and City Council who have appropiated the necessary funds for these needed repairs.

The Librarian is most grateful to each member of the Library staff, to John Szmura, Library custodian, to each substitute for each individual's contribution to our mutual goal of providing good library service for our community.

Respectfully submitted,

Katherine M. Kuechle Librarian
