Respectfully submitted,
STEPHEN A. LOVEJOY, Water Registrar.
Report of the Superintendent.
To the Board of Water Commissioners :
GENTLEMEN : - I herewith submit my annual report.
The water works have been kept in good condition dur- ing the past year. Breaks have, however, been of frequent occurrence in the old cement pipes, and it seems to be a matter of necessity that the cement pipes, which have been in use for nearly thirty years, should be replaced with cast iron pipe, especially as the water pressure will be increased soon ten pounds-as soon as the supply shall come from the new reservoir, which will probably be some time during the coming summer. During the year 1898 new iron pipe has been laid as follows :
" 108 “ 6 Wheeler avenue. 225 ft. 6 in. pipe, West Emerson street. 160 " 6 .. Holland road.

REPORT
OF THE
BOARD OF HEALTH
OF THE
TOWN OF MELROSE, MASS.,
FOR THE
YEAR ENDING DECEMBER 31, 1898.
MELROSE : DUNTON & POTTER, PRINTERS, REPORTER OFFICE.

1899.
REPORT OF THE BOARD OF HEALTH.
The ninth annual report of the board of health is here- with presented.
A change occurred in the membership of the board early in the year. Joseph W. Spaulding, Esq., having resigned, May 17th, in consequence of the pressing demands of his other duties, at a joint meeting, June 7th, of the board of selectmen and the board of health the vacancy was filled by the unanimous election of Dr. C. W. Harlow of Melrose Highlands.
The important office of inspector of plumbing, which had been filled by Mr. T. M. Woods of Malden, was made va- cant by his resignation, to take effect April Ist. The board of health filled this vacancy by the appointment, March 29th, of Mr. John T. Barker of Melrose, the state board of examiners having recommended him as the highest on the list of those presented for competitive examination.
The work of the board has continued during the year past on the same general lines as heretofore: Examinations into nuisances of all kinds and the abatement of them, as over- flowing cesspools, lawless and offensive evacuation of the same; neglected drains, untrapped fixtures and unvented traps, with other similar violations of the laws of sanitation.
