Report of the Chief Engineer of the Fire Department
To His Honor the Mayor, Eugene H. Moore :-
Dear Sir :- I respectfully submit the annual report of the Fire Department for the year ending December 31, 1908.
Organization.
The force of the Department consists of a Chief Engineer and two Asst. Engineers. seven permanent men and twenty- nine call men and five temporary call men.
Apparatus.
Consists of one steam fire engine, one hook and ladder truck, four hose wagons, one Beverly wagon, three double runner pungs, two old sleds, 12 chemical extinguishers. The coal wagon was condemned and sold, and the hose wagon formerly used by Hose Co. No. 2. is now used for an exercise wagon for the Central Station horses, the apparatus is all in good condition.
Horses.
There are ten horses in the Department, seven of which are in first-class shape. Three should be sold and three new ones bought.
Hose.
1,550 feet of hose was purchased during the year from the Eureka Hose Mfg. Co., at a cost of 60 cents per ft. We now have 6,800 feet of good hose and 1,650 feet poor hose.
Fire Alarm.
The Fire alarm system is in good condition with the exception that there is 20 miles of iron wire that will have to be

replaced by covered wire, and I recommend that two hundred dollars be appropriated yearly for that purpose so that at the end of about five years the wire would be all of the covered description. Some of the iron wire has been in use about 21 years. Two new fire alarm boxes have been added the past year. Box 73, corner of Ashland and Franklin streets; Box 74, corner of Frost and Hawes avenue.
Fires.
The department has answered 59 bell alarms and 72 still alarms. 3 second alarms. One call to Chelsea and one call to Stoneham. Amount of hose 'laid during year, 25,850 feet. Chemical charges used, 200. Number of covers used 8. Number feet of ladders used 1,354 feet. Number of miles run, 113. Number of hours service at fires 128.
