CITY OF MELROSE.

If the work which the library is doing in the community is to be carried on with any degree of success we should have an appropriation of $2,500 for this department. $2,000 for mag- azine subscriptions and new books, and for rebinding, and $500 for replacing soiled and untidy volumes.

In the children's department we need not only new books, but additional chairs and tables and a covering for the floor. These needs are imperative. We have 23 chairs and an aver- age attendance of 40 children all trying to read or study. Confusion and discomfort must necessarily attend such lack of accommodations, while the unavoidable noise of walking on floors of wood is a great annoyance.

The room promised for the reception of the Memorial Art Collection must be made ready. The walls must be re-tinted, the ceiling whitened, the floor polished and the closets re- moved.

For furniture, changes and floor covering in the children's room, and for re-furnishing the Trustees' room the sum of $500 will be required.

268 volumes have been loaned to the High School under the same special arrangement as in previous years. Lists of books suitable for reading by children in the grammar schools have been made, printed on the neostyle and circulated in the schools.

The Duplicate Pay Library has been successfully con- tinued. For it 62 novels have been purchased, and from their circulation we have collected $85.00 in fines.

Books in the reference room have been catalogued, thus completing the cataloguing of the entire library.

One new bulletin has been published containing 1014 titles. Sixteen exhibits of the Library Art Club have been given, and again we thank Mrs. Charles C. Barry for this valu- able addition to the Art Department.

The Historic and Art Room has been opened for a course of lectures by the Rev. Mr. Jackson, upon: "Literature of the 18th Century." The room has also been used for the meetings of the Horticultural and Improvement Society, for a public meeting of Faneuil Hall Chapter D. A. R., and occasionally for

meetings of committees interested in various lines of civic im- provement or welfare.

We have received from Mrs. Joseph Roberts, a valuable collection of mounted Brazilian birds, and thirty miscellaneous volumes have been donated by individual friends of the library.

The work of administering library affairs, the routine work of the library, is constantly increasing, but we have made no addition to our library staff. We appreciate gratefully the efforts of its members to meet courteously and cheerfully the growing demands of their work, and to respond with ready interest to its requirements.

In addition to the sum of $2,500 for books and magazines, we ask for library purposes through the year, the amount of the dog tax, and a sum sufficient to make $3,735, covering the needs of the four remaining departments, Salaries, Heating and Lighting, Contingent, and Furniture, Repairs and Changes, a total amount of $6,235.

The appropriation asked for is larger than that of previous years, but not one dollar more than the work of the library de- mands if administered on even a conservative basis.

Respectfully submitted,

ANNA T. BUSH, Secretary.
