RUSSELL.
2180. On the top of this hill, not far from the monument of Gover- nor Bradford, may be seen a granite boulder, brought from the pine hills of ""Manomet," on which is neatly cut the following inscription:
THOS RUSSELL DONA SEPT 26 1825
TEM 9 1007
THOMAS RUSSELL, BORN,
SEPT. 26, 1825, DIED, FEB, 9, 1887.
HON. THOMAS RUSSELL, was the son of Thomas and Mary Ann (Goodwin) Russell, of Plymouth, born September 26, 1825. His early home was on Leyden Street, the first street of the Pilgrim Fathers, and here he received his earliest im- pressions of the trials and endurance of the founders of New England, and com- menced early in life to honor the history of their lives in which he always took a lively interest. From early boyhood he was of a lively turn of mind, quick, bright and active, and a good scholar, receiving his education in the excellent schools which his native village afforded; he entered Harvard College at an early age, from whence he graduated in 1845, with high honors. He studied law at Harvard Law

School, and in the office of Hon. Jacob HI. Loud at Plymouth, till 1847, when he · became a resident of Boston, and was a member of the Suffolk bar. Although a citizen of another municpiality he never ceased to remember the town of his nativity, and was active in promoting the interests of her citizens, and the historical associa- tions connected with the old mother town. He was chosen president of the Pilgrim Society in 1879, to succeed Hon. William T. Davis, and retained that position till his death. He was also instrumental in having inscribed upon the rock on Clark's Island the words, " On the Sabboth day wee rested," in remembrance of the first Sabbath spent on the shore by the Pilgrimis.
Judge Russell did not practice his chosen profession long, for in 1853, at the early age of 27 years, Governor Boutwell appointed him Judge of the Municipal Court of Boston, a position which he filled with such general satisfaction that, in 1859, Gov- ernor Banks selected him as a proper person for Associate Justice of the Superior Court, where he remained until 1867. It was while he occupied the judicial chair of this court that he displayed those traits of firmness in his convictions and good judg- ment which were prominent characteristics belonging to him as a magistrate. Among the many good things the judge did while in the fearless discharge of his duties was the record he made in putting down garrotting in the streets of Boston. His sentence to the extent of the law was so promptly given that a reign of terror soon followed among all who were disposed to commit crimes of that nature, the in- fluence of which has lasted to the present time. In 1866 he resigned his position on the bench to become collector of the port of Boston, which position he held until 1874, when he resigned, and was soon after appointed by President Grant Min- ister Resident at Caracas, Venezuela, where he remained till March, 1878. In 1879 he represented Boston in the Massachusetts Legislature, and became an influential and useful member of that body.
In June, 1879, he was appointed by Governor Talbot Railroad Commissioner, a position he filled, as chairman of the board, at the time of his death. Besides the foregoing, he occupied many other positions of honor and trust. In 1878 he was President of the Emigrant Savings Bank, and was an Overseer of Harvard College, a Trustee of the State Reform School and the Nautical School Ship, and during the war was a Draft Commissioner, and was intensely loyal to the Union, and always looked after the interests of the soldier, prompt and patriotic in all his acts.
Judge Russell was of a kindly disposition, genial temperament, and had many social traits that won for him hosts of friends; of much original wit and humor, a wonderful conversationalist, full of varied information acquired by extensive reading.
HIis humanity was large, and his love of liberty was such that it was not strange that we find him identified with such men as Garrison, Phillips, Andrews, and others in the Anti-Slavery cause, and a leader in the Free Soilers' ranks. Upon the occasion of the visit of General Grant to Plymouth, it was Judge Russell's privilege, as President of the Pilgrim Society, to receive the General, and place in his hand the sword of Captain Myles Standish.
HIe saw the bright side of life, and enjoyed it. He was, indeed, eminent as spe- cialist, jurist, statesman, and orator. Among his best efforts as a public orator was the occasion of the obsequies of General Grant, August 8, 1885, by Post 76, G. A. R. "which was an eloquent, appropriate and fitting eulogy upon the great Chieftain." His last public address was upon the occasion of the Anniversary of the Pilgrim Society at a dinner at which Hon. James Russell Lowell was present, December 21, 1885.
He was a member of Mt. Lebanon Lodge, A. F. and A. M., Boston, and had

spoken at a great many assemblies, and was well known in political, judicial and social circles of Boston, as well as throughout the State. His death took place Feb- ruary 9, 1887, at his home, 20 Hancock Street, in Boston, and in accordance with his oft repeated desire to be buried on Burial Hill, his request was granted. B. K.

EPITAPHS FROM BURIAL IHILL.
Here multitudes have gathered under the shadows of the beautiful elm and larch trees, and lingered to contemplate in their minds the wintry scenes of 1620. This is the central point of interest on the hill. (See No. 1, page 1.)
From this last monument, following the path northerly on the right, we read the names of BRADFORD, BARNES, BARTLETT, COOPER, DOTEN, HOLMES, SAMPSON, SHURTLEFF and SYLVES- TER, while those on the left are BRADFORD, COBB, JACKSON, MORTON, RICKARD, TRIBBLE and WETHERELL. The last named is enclosed by an iron fence and is near to the main path.
At the junction of the main path with the north path leading to the westerly entrance of the ground may be seen a solid granite monument about 5 feet high, on the front of which is a panel in bronze commemorating the memory of one of Ply- mouth's late well-known physicians, DR. ZACHEUS BARTLETT. (See No. 1415, page 185.)
