734. This Stone | Confecrated to the memory | of the Revd CHANDLER ROBBINS D. D. | was erected | By the inhabi- tants of the firft | Religious Society in Plymouth | As their laft grateful tribute of refpect | For his eminent labors | In the min- iftry | of JESUS CHRIST | Which commenced January 30th 1760 | and continued till his death June 30, 1799 | Atatis 61 | When he entered into the everlafting reft | Prepared for the faithful embafadors | Of the most high God.
Ah! come heavn's radiant Offpring hither throng Behold your prophet your Elijah fled Let faered fymphony attune cach tongue To chant hofannas with the virtuous dead.
Rev. CHANDLER ROBBINS, D. D. was the son of Rev. Philemon Robbins, of Branford, Conn., who was a native of Cambridge, Mass. Born August 24, 17 38, graduated at Yale College in 1756, and was a distinguished classical scholar. Hle was ordained to the work of the ministry January 30, 1760, the same day on which Rev. Mr. Leonard was dismissed. He became early impressed with the truth and importance of the christian system, and qualified, by divine grace, for the gospel ministry. He commenced preaching this holy religion before he reached twenty years of age. In him was an example of religion, united with taste and accomplish- ments, of courteous manners, with an amiable cheerfulness of disposition. He always manifested a deep interest in, and a solicitude for the cause of religion in general, never forgetting the welfare and propriety of his church and society. In the discharge of his parochial duties he was ever faithful and kind; and the sick and afflicted could rely with confidence on his cordial sympathy and condolence. He had a peculiar suavity of manners, and christian humility combined with such a felicity of expression that rendered his religious sentiments acceptable to many who would not have received them from another source. His voice was melodious, and his taste for music, both vocal and instrumental was very refined. He preached chiefly without notes, having only a skeleton of his sermon before him. In prayer he was peculiarly devotional and fervent. Dr. Robbins lived during a remarkable period of the nation's history. In the revolutionary struggle he was a most zealous advocate for liberty and independence, and rendered essential service in his sphere of action. Ile was among the foremost of our patriotic clergymen, and subsequently, when our political hemis- phere was darkened by party spirit, he pursued a consistent course in the support of order and good government. Mr. Robbins' wife was a niece of Rev. Thomas Prince of Boston. He had five sons and two daughters who lived to an old age.
A doctorate of divinity was conferred on him by Dartmouth College in 1792, and by the University of Edinburgh in 1793. He was buried in old Burial Hill ground, the Reverends Mr. Sawyer and Shaw officiating in the services in the First Church
The following is a list of published works by Dr. Robbins :
Replies to Essays of Rev. John Cotton, on the practice of the half-way covenant. - Sermon on the death of Madam Watson, consort of George Watson, Esq. of Ply- mouth .- Sermon on the death of Mrs. Hovey, wife of James Hovey, Esq .- At the ordination of Rev. 764. G. W. In Memory of | GEORGE WATSON Esqr | who died the 3d of December 1800 | in the 83d Year of his Age.
No folly wafted his paternal Store, No guilt, no fordid av'rice made it more: With honeft fame, and fober plenty crown'd, He liv'd and fpread his cheering influence 'round. Pure was his walk and peacefull was his end - We blefs'd his rev'rend length of Days, And hail'd him in the public ways, With veneration and with praife Our Father and our Friend.
It falls to the lot of but few people to leave such a reputation as that of Mr. Watson. By his uprightness of character and uniform dignity of manners, he preserved the respectability of his family to the grave, and we need no better testimonial of departed worth, than to know that his fellow citizens, assembled in town meeting, recommended the church bell to be tolled three hours on the day of his burial, a suspension of the usual business in the town, the closing of shops and stores, and a display of flags at half-mast on the shipping in the harbor. He was of an ancient and honorable family and died in a ripe old age. Rev. Dr. Kendall attended his funeral services and preached a sermon which was printed. Those who are familiar with North Street in Plymouth, the place of his residence, will call to mind the great pleasure Mr. Watson took in the cultivation of those fine linden trees at the front and rear of his house, and under the shadow of whose limbs, and in the cool refreshing shade of which he spent so many happy hours and days.
. In person Col Watson was portly and well proportioned, liis countenance noble and placid, and his urbanity and courtesy were proverbial. He left three children : Mary who married Elisha Hutchinson Esq., son of Governor Hutchinson of Massa- chusetts, and died in England before her father deceased. Sarah who married Mar- tin Brimmer Esq, a merchant of Boston, and died in August, 1832. Elizabeth who married Hon. Thomas Russell, a merchant of Boston.
