$193,209.43

The financial condition of the Town of Hatfield is both sound and strong. With the exception of a reimbursement note for $5,140.30 for Highway Chapter 81, no money had to be borrowed to conduct the town's business for 1942. At the same time the funded indebtedness ($5,000.00, last note on Memorial Town Hall) was paid as also was an an- ticipation of revenue note for $25,000.00 negotiated in 1941.

At the close of 1942, the Town had the enviable posi- tion which so many Towns strive for, namely that of being debt free.

One tax title is held by the town and is in the process of liquidation. It will be cleared from the books early in 1943.

P. S. ROGALESKI,

Treasurer.

Report of Water Commissioners

To the Honorable Board of Selectmen and the Citizens of Hatfield :

Greetings :

Your board of Water Commissioners herewith present their report for the past year. Due to present existing conditions our work has bene considerably held up. We have purchased considerable new material and equiped our department with sufficient new stock to take care of many emergencies, should they present themselves. Superintendent Eberlin has done much repair work on old services and repaired all hydrants. Your reservoir has been kept clean. One thousand new pines have been set out and we can assure you that things are in generaly good condition.

We thank you, S. M. BOURDON,

RUPERT HARUBIN, RAYMOND BALISE,

Commissioners.

Library Report

Herewith is my seventh annual report as librarian of the Public Library.

The splendid cooperation of all libraries in cities and towns, has given Massachusetts a high record of achieve- ment in the National Victory Book Campaign. Standing eighth in population, Massachusetts held fifth place among the states, in number of books collected, total number was 696,833.

Hatfield's contribution towards this number was 1,659 books. With the exception of 511 books donated by Smith Academy, most of these books were taken from our shelves.

We have added 445 books during the year, 169 were for children and 277 for adults, with 24 periodicals in cir- culation.

Honor Reading certificates are being awarded each year to the children of the Center School, for reading books from the approved reading lists, sent out by the Division of Public Libraries of the State Department of Education.

Circulation resulting from the services of the Books Mobile of Greenfield, Mass., in West Hatfield and North Hatfield was 1,680. This is a decrease from the preced- ing year, due to the closing of the North Hatfield and Bradstreet Schools. We hope the Book Mobile service may continue, for the benefit of the people in West Hatfield and North Hatfield, along the state road.

30

The circulation of books and periodicals for the year was:

Juvenile Fiction

7,758

Juvenile Non-Fiction

2,206

Adult Fiction

10,042

Adult Non-Fiction

2,734

Book Mobile

1,527

A total of

24,267

The total number of borrowers, including men, women and children is eight hundred and twenty-four (824).

The library is open Monday and Friday from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. for adults only, Wednesday from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. and from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. for adults and children.

I wish to express my sincere appreciation to Miss Margaret Hayes, the Trustees and to the Teachers for their hearty cooperation.

Respectfully submitted,

THERESA M. GODIN,

Librarian.

Civilian Defense Report

To the Board of Selectmen and Citizens of Hatfield:

The success which has attended all activities con- nected with Civilian Defense may be attributed in a large measure to the efficiency and earnestness of the members of the various units. These members have given unstint- ingly of their time and energy and have proved that they are willing to do even more than what is expected of them. All practice air raid drills have been completed satisfac- torily with the full cooperation of the townspeople. The whole-hearted support of the town officials has helped im- measurably in this common cause, the ultimate goal of which is Victory.

Respectfully submitted, ROBERT BIEBER, Jr.,

Chairman of Civilian Defense.

Report of School Committee

To the Citizens of Hatfield :

Your committee has held regular monthly meetings for the transaction of school matters.

We have continued the School Lunch Project in co- sponsorship withe the selectmen.

In the general interest of economy the classrooms at North Hatfield and Bradstreet were closed and those younger pupils brought into the center classrooms. Warm lunches have been available for all pupils who receive transportation.

During the summer months an effort was made to keep the entire playground in good and useful appearance. We believe with the curtailment of private pleasure trans- portation that a wider use will be made of this central playground.
