I. Ross, JAMES, s. of James Ross of Lancaster (Sterling), b. March 12, 1738-9, m. Phebe Gerry, May 7, 1766. He was at that time owner of lot No. 20, 2d Div., on Beech Hill (the old town farm), which he bought the previous year of Amos Gates, and which he sold the following autumn to Edward Jackson. He afterwards purchased No. 24, where Leonard M. Gates now lives, of John Edgell, where he no doubt res. while he remained in town. He soon returned to Lanc., but rem. thence to Erving, being dismissed to the church there Oct. 16, I774. The only chd. rec. in W. was:

The families of this name formerly residing in town were descendants of Abraham1, who came from England in 1629 or 30 and set. in Duxbury, near Plymouth, though there is some uncertainty in regard to the connection at a single point. Isaac Sampson2, s. of Abraham1, b. 1660, m. Lydia, gd.dau. of Miles Standish, and lived at Plympton, where he had a s. Peleg8 who is supposed to have been the f. of Jonathan4, b. Oct. 5, 1733. The latter lo- cated at Harvard, where he m. Mary Oakes, rem. thence to Ash., becoming there a prominent and patriotic citizen, serving on the Com. of Correspon- dence in pre-revolutionary times, and in other positions of public trust and honor. From him sprung those mentioned below.


I. SAMPSON, ABRAM5, was s. of the last, b. May 22, 1763. Coming to W. he m. Sally, dau. of Daniel and Elizabeth (Baker) Adams (pub. Sept. 19, 1785), and set. on the estate of his f .- in- law in the south part of the town, near where the sch. ho. in District No. 10 formerly stood. He was a blacksmith, and his shop was a landmark in the neighborhood during the early part

Dec. 29, 1836, Lucy, dau. of Daniel and Priscilla (Hastings) Sawin, and finally located on the spot still occupied by him near the outlet of the so-called town meadows. He is a carpenter by trade, though devoting his time mostly in later years to farming. Chn. :

Their s., Jonathan2, a Deacon in the chh., was the f. of Samuel3 who m. Mercy Gale and had Abraham4, b. March 28, 1711, and Moses4. b. Feb. 22, 1721-2. Abraham4 m. Patience Smith of Weston, and set. in Lunenburg, where a s., Samuel5, sup. to be Samuel of W. and Gr. mentioned under the last head, was b. April 26, 1734. If so, he m. (1) Sarah Gould, cousin of Benjamin Gould (see p. 672), and (2) Lydia Boynton. the mother of Moses, also spoken of above.

Moses4, the other s. of Samuel3 and Mercy (Gale) Sanderson, m (1) Jan. I, 1750-I, Mary, dau. of John and Hannah (Bemis) Flagg, a distant cousin of Elizabeth Flagg who m. Joshua Bigelow, and had Moses" and two daus. Moses5. b. Waltham, Aug. 15, 1755, went to Littleton, where he m. Mary Procter and res. awhile, but moved thence to Ash. ab. 1790.


I. SANDERSON, SIMEON6, s. of the last mentioned couple, was b. Littleton, Sept. 24, 1790. He prob. lived with his par- ents during his minority, when he enjoyed the somewhat mea- ger educational privileges of the time. He however was able to qualify himself for a school teacher, in which capacity he first appeared in W. His taste and ambition being turned to the profession of law, he entered the office of Alexander Dustin, Esq., under whose direction he fitted for the bar, to which he was admitted in the autumn of 1824. Not long after, Mr. Dustin rem. to Sterling, and Mr. Sanderson succeeded to his office and practice in this town. He was a man of acknowledged ability, and stood well in professional circles. He took an active part in public affairs, and held many important official positions : was on the Sch. Com. some dozen yrs., Selectman 3 yrs., and repre- sented his fellow-citizens in the Mass. Legislature of 1827. He m. Sally, dau. of Col. Asa and Sally (Puffer) Bigelow, in 1822, and res. in the house which formerly stood on the site occupied by the dwelling of David W. Hill. Mr. Sanderson d. Dec. 10, 1841, a. 51. His wid. subsequently m. Phineas Reed. She is still living at the advanced age of four score and ten years. Simeon and Sally B. Sanderson had I chd .:

SANGAR, DAVID4, s. of John3 and Rebecca Sangar of Water- town, b. March 21, 1696-97, was one of the early proprietors of Nar. No. 2, owning and improving, as early as 1745, lot No. 47, the former Israel Dickinson place, beyond No. Common.


His f. was s. of Richard2 of Sudbury, s. of the immigrant, Richard1, who had lands assigned him in Hingham in 1636 or 1637. David4 seems to have been only an intermittent resident here, but located his s. John5 on his estate, where, as reported to the Gen. Ct. in 1751, he had "4 acres cleared," and was "build- ing a house." The f., with a w. and 8 chn., retained his home at Watertown, and the s. d. at Deerfield, unm., Oct. 9, 1755. The estate soon after passed into the hands of Nathaniel Wheeler of Acton, whose s., Nath.l, Jr., occupied it some 25 years. David Sangar d. Dec. 22, 1761. Both f. and s. were blacksmiths, and, it is presumed, had a shop on their premises.


SAWIN.


This name, occasionally spelled Sawing in the early records, represents one of the largest families or groups of families that have ever had a habi- tation in W. They mostly belonged to one branch of the original Sawin

stock, which first appeared on these shores in the person of John Sawin1 of Watertown, who was made "freeman" in Boston, May 26, 1652. He was s. of Robert Sawin of Boxford, Suffolk Co., Eng., whence he came as early as the spring of 1650. He was a cordwainer (shoemaker) by trade, but owned considerable landed property in the town where he first lived, and in Weston where he passed the last years of his life, dying in 1690. He m., ab. 1652, Abigail, dau. of George and Abigail Munning, thus bringing a name into the family which has been retained until recently, if not to the present date. It was first given as a personal appellation to the second of his three sons, who was b. April 4, 1655, and who spent his days in Water- town, where he was a leading and highly honored citizen. John8, s. of Mun- ning2, b. in 1689, succeeded to the paternal estate and to many public honors. He m. Elizabeth Coolidge, Dec. 5. 1711, by whom he had 9 chn., one of whom was the first of the name in W.


I. SAWIN, STEPHEN4, s. of John3 and Elizabeth (Coolidge) Sawin, was b. in Watertown, 1712, and having m. Abigail Fiske, sr. of Mrs. Eliezer Bigelow and of Mrs. Samuel Hager, set. in his native place as farmer and shoemaker. Ab. the year 1745 he rem. to Worc., whence he came some 15 yrs. later to this town. On the 15th of Aug., 1760, he purchased of Joseph Hosley the greater part of lots Nos. 37, now owned by Samuel Bridge, and 38, the Betsey Bacon place, and located upon the latter the following year. He ere long purchased considerable portions of what was known as the Governor's farm in the immediate neighborhood, making him one of the largest resi- dent landholders at that date, and enabling him to furnish each of his 4 sons homesteads of reasonable size near at hand. He d. in 1795 at the age of 83. His wid. d. in 1803, a. 92. Their chn. were:

[3.] SAWIN, SAMUEL5, second s. of Stephen4, b. in Water- town, accompanied his f. to Worc., where he m. Molly Wasson of Sudbury, June 19, 1760, a year before his rem. to W. He set. on lot No. 37, the present Samuel Bridge farm, which he carried on in connection with his trade as stonecutter. He was active in public affairs, and an ardent patriot in Revolu- tionary times, was several years Selectman, and, animated by the military spirit, served as Lieut. under Capt. Noah Miles at the time of the Lexington alarm, and in the same capacity under Capt. Elisha Jackson when troops were called to Ben- nington in 1777. He afterward obtained a Capt.'s commission in the State Militia. His first w., Molly Wasson, d. ab. 1770, and he m. (2) Martha, dau. of Dea. Joseph and Mary (Williams) Miller (pub. [8.] SAWIN, REUBEN5, youngest s. of Stephen+ and Abigail, was b. Worcester in 1752. He came to W. when 9 years of age, and m. Annis Robbins, Dec. 24, 1773. He set. on a sec- tion of the Governor's farm, now represented by Wm. H. Bar- ber. He was a millwright and carpenter as well as farmer, erecting, it is said, the first sawmill in Gardner, and superintend- ing the raising of 13 meetinghouses. He was a sort of "universal genius," as a glance at one of his old account books, still preserved, clearly shows. He was, moreover, employed in the public service as Assessor and Selectman for several years, his native talent, practical judgment, and executive ability be-

ing universally recognized and acknowledged. He was in two or three short campaigns during the Revolution, though his tastes and qualifications fitted him rather for civil than for military life. He d. Oct. 25, 1797, when only 45 yrs. of age. His wid. m. (2) Kendall Parsons, Hub., and d. in July, 1835, at the age of 80. Their chn. were:

[12.] SAWIN, JAMES6, bro. of the last, was brought to W. on horseback when 6 weeks old. He m. Elizabeth, dau. John and Anna (Bemis) Estabrook, Oct. 27, 1785. He is said to have been a soldier in the Rev., though his name does not ap- pear in the Mass. archives. He first set. in S. W. part of the town, on the corner opp. where the wid. of Norman Seaver now res., but ere long returned to his father's, and there re- mained through life. The house inherited by him is now gone. He d. Aug. 26, 1859, a. 98 yrs. 7 mos. 24 ds. His w. d. Dec. 26, 1852, a. 89 yrs. II mos. 18 ds. Chn .:

[26.] SAWIN, SULLIVAN6, s. of Capt. Samuel5 and Martha (Miller) Sawin, m. Mary, dau. of Timothy and Patience (Steb- bins) Heywood, to whom he was pub. Sept. 12, 1801. He suc- ceeded to his father's estate, and spent most of his active life in W., carrying on the farm, and doing a considerable millwright business besides. Ab. the year 1830 he removed to Gardner, engaging in the manufacture of lumber, chair stock, farming, etc., until advancing years and the infirmities of age put an end to his labors. While in W. he served for some years on the board of Selectmen, and in other less responsible places of public trust. He was a Whig in politics, and in religion sympathized with the more rational and liberal branch of the Chn. church. He d. Aug. 30, 1846, a. 68. His w., Mary, d. Feb. 1, 1844, a. 67. Dec. 5). She d. Aug. 3, 1835, a. 51, and he m. (3) Wid. Deborah (May) Derby in 1836. He lived a- while with his father on the ancestral homestead, then at differ- ent localities in town, finally locating on the Jonathan Phillips place on Bacon St. He was a famous fox-hunter in his day, and what he did not know about the habits and tricks of that mischievous, sly little animal, was hardly worth searching for. He d. Nov. 2, 1860, a. 87. His wid., Deborah (May), d. April 20, 1871, a. 85. His 2 chn. were by his first w.
