Ann M. wid. N. Whitney,

Of the three hundred and thirty-two persons whose names appear in the above catalogue, sixty-seven attained the age of ninety years, and three it is claimed, though there is some doubt in regard to the validity of such claim, were centen- narians. At the first "Old Folks' Picnic," held in June, 1878, there were in town one hundred and thirty-six persons seventy years old and upwards, while at the last meeting, which took place Aug. 17, 1892, there were one hundred and twenty-eight equally advanced in life.

Numerous instances of sudden death by apoplexy, heart disease, and kindred ailments are on record, but it has not been deemed desirable to catalogue them here. For reasons that will readily suggest themselves to the reader, the few cases of suicide in town that have been brought to the notice of the editor are also omitted.

DESTRUCTIVE CONFLAGRATIONS.

CASUALTIES BY FIRE.

No record of the numerous buildings that have been destroyed by fire in Westminster has been found, and the list that appears below is therefore made up from such detached and casual data as have come incidentally to light. It has been found impossi- ble to obtain dates in a few cases, and no doubt there are other omissions in the category. It makes no claim to absolute com- pleteness, although so far as it goes it is deemed reasonably correct.

VOTES FOR PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.

For many years after the formation of the Federal govern- ment there was no established system of choosing Presidential Electors in this Commonwealth, the method changing from time to time at the discretion of the Legislature. In 1788 the State was divided into eight districts, each district being empowered to vote for two candidates for the office, of whom one should be chosen by the Legislature, in addition to two at large to be similarly chosen. In 1792 there were four districts of varying size, Westminster being in the 4th Western, to which the right of choosing five Electors was granted. The people failing of a choice, the Legislature filled the vacancies. In 1796 there were fourteen districts, each entitled to one Elector and voting only for one. In 1800 the General Court chose the entire Board without any action on the part of the people. The same was true in 1808 and 1816. In 1804 there were nineteen Electors voted for by the whole people, all on one ticket. In 1812 the State was divided into six districts, the one to which this town belonged choosing six Electors. In 1820 the plan was adopted of having one Elector to each Con- gressional District and two at large on one ticket, to be chosen by the entire voting population. And this plan has continued to the present time. The vote of Westminster at each elec- tion has been as follows :

1788-Number of votes cast, 78; presumably for *Washington. (See page 189.) 1792-Highest vote cast, 30. No choice in this district. * Washington elected.

1796 -* John Adams, Federalist, received 45 votes: no opposition.

CHAPTER XXIV.

PROFESSIONAL AND OFFICIAL PORTFOLIO.

GRADUATES-MEMBERS OF PROFESSIONS-PUBLIC OFFICERS- VOTING LIST, 1892.

OF the large number of persons born in Westminster during the entire period of its history but few have shared the privi- leges of a collegiate education or been crowned with the honors of a professional career. Yet are they worthy of special mention in these pages, as are those, native or otherwise, who have pursued what are deemed the higher callings of life in this community, or been raised by their fellow-citizens to im- portant positions of trust and responsibility in the public ser- vice. And to the chronicling of the names of such the closing chapter of the First Part of this work is particularly devoted.

The lists herein presented are no doubt more or less incom- plete, but as far as they go are believed to be correct. The classification includes a few persons long resident and well known in town who were born elsewhere. They can be deter- mined without difficulty by referring to the register of the family to which they belonged in subsequent pages, where appropriate notices of those mentioned will have a place.
