BACON. The attempt to trace the lineage of this W. family has been attended with no very satisfactory results. One George Bacon and his wife, Mary, were in Roxbury early in the last century, but whence they came or whither they went has not been ascertained. They are sup. to have been the parents of George of Newton, but of this there is no abso- lute proof. The latter m. Susannah, dan. of John Greenwood of N., whose sr. Ruth m. Isaac Jackson and became the mother of Josiah, Edward, and Elisha, settlers in this town about the time of its incorporation.

I. BACON, EDWARD, S. of George and Susannah (Greenwood) Bacon, was b. at Newton, Dec. 27, 1744. On the 16th of Feb., 1772, he, then said to be "of Cambridge," where he perhaps res. a few yrs., bought of Thomas Brigden lot No. 47, 2d Div., in the E. part of the town, on which he set. and where he and his descendants lived until a recent date. He bore the title of Lieut., and hence may be presumed to have been active in mili- tary circles. He was a high-minded, trustworthy citizen, taking an active part in the affairs of the town, and holding many years the office of selectman besides other positions of respon- sibility and honor. His w. was Lydia, dau. of Dea. John and Hannah (Greenwood) Woodward of Newton, to whom he was pub. May 28, 1773. He d. July 2, 1829, a. 84; she d. Jan. 25, 1833, a. 83. Chd .:

Betsey Bacon (20), oldest dau. of the last, was a woman of strong intellectual powers, of marked traits of character, and of unusual executive ability. Cherish- ing opinions of her own, she was free to express them; knowing her rights, she dared maintain them. Familiar with books and the current news of her day, she was herself a writer of some merit and an occasional contributor to the public press upon topics moral, social, and religious, in which she took an interest. Leav- ing the parental roof at an early age she made her home with her maternal grand- parents in the south part of W., caring for them in their declining years, and, at their death, succceding to their dwelling and the greater part of their estate, which she managed with prudence and skill. A severe illness in IS5S resulted some years later in the loss of the power of vision, but she still attended to her household duties and looked after the affairs of her farm, till, enfeebled by the infirmities of age, she was obliged to resign them to those better able to have them in charge. Fler spirit of independence and her pious trust never forsook her, even in the most trying hours of life, but remained sure and steadfast to the end. She passed to her rest, July 15, 1881, in the 88th year of her age.

BAKER.

About the year 1720 John Baker and Elizabeth, his wife, with two small children, John and Robert, came to this country from Bristol, Eng., for a permanent settlement. Others of the name preceded them to these shores, whose descendants had already attained considerable numbers and had been widely distributed through the several colonies. It is not known that the new-comers were in any way related to those who were here before them, though it is possible, if not probable, that they belonged to the same original stock from which they branched off at some remote period of history. Sufficient for the purposes of the present inquiry is the fact that John1 and Elizabeth, the connubial pilgrims of 1720, became the united head of an entirely new branch of the Baker family in this part of America, and that those of the name in W. have derived existence from them. They first located in Charlestown, in which place four more chn. were b., but rem. thence in a few years to Concord, where still other four came to increase the family, making a domestic group of an even dozen, themselves included. Of the children, two sons and two daughters became residents of W. One of the last, Elizabeth, m. Daniel Adams, and another, Sarah, d. here, unm., at an unascertained date. The sons are mentioned below.

This mill was the first erected and put in operation in that country.
