The Streets of New Bedford, with a very few exceptions, are laid out North and South, East and West intersecting each other at right angles, or nearly so. Those running North and South are numbered commencing at Union Street and increasing each way, with the even. numbers on the East and the odd numbers on the West side. Those running East and West, are numbered, commencing at the river and increasing Westerly, with the even numbers on the South, and the odd numbers on the North side. Any departure from this rule will be noted in the following list.


The letters enclosed by brackets, which follow the name of any street, signify the general bearing of such street from the City Hall : Thus, School street. [S.] is South from the City Hall.


Acushnet, a village at the head of the Acushnet River, about three ' and a half miles, in a northerly direction from the City Hall-the wes- terly part being in New Bedford, and the easterly part in Fairhaven.


Acushnet Avenue, [N.] from the Rail Road crossing at B. Rodman's 1 farm, North to Acushnet Village.


Acushnet Heights, an elevated portion of land extending northerly ? from Willis street, on each side of County street, commanding a fine .: and extensive view of the harbor, Buzzard's Bay, Fairhaven Village, and the opposite shores of the Acushnet River.


Allen's Mill Road, [N. W.] leading from Perry's Corner to " Allen's ' Mills," in Dartmouth

Cannonville, the neighborhood in the vicinity of the Meeting House standing at the junction of the " Noel Taber" road with the " Smith's Mills " road.


Cedar street, [N. W.] fifth street west of County and extends from Morgan street north to Smith street-open from Kempton to Smith.


Centre street. [E.] from North Water east to Central Wharf.


Chancery street, [N. W. ] from Kempton street north. This street is the seventh west of County.


Charles street. [N.] from Purchase street. west to County, and in line with High street. The numbers on this street are in continuation of the numbers on High street.


Cheapside, [E.] from Union to William street, in range with Fifth, and nearly in line with Pleasant street.


Cherry street, [S. W.] from Sixth street west to County, and nearly in line with Coffin street-open from Seventh to County.


Chestnut street, [N. W.] Second street west of County, and extends from Kempton to Smith street-partially open.


Coffin street, [S. E.] from Eddy's Wharf west to South Second street, and nearly in line with Cherry street.


Commercial street, [S. E.] from Commercial Wharf. westerly to South Water street.


Cottage strect, [S. W. ] Third street west of County, and will ulti- mately extend from Union street southerly to Allen or Dartmouth street. It is now open from Hawthorn to Bedford street.

Fourth street, [ S. ] from Union street south-now open from Union street nearly to Wing street.


Franklin street, [N. ] third street north of Willis and extends from Purchase street west to County street. Numbers commence at Pur- chase street.


Grape street, [S. W.] This street extends westerly from Oak street, and is situated a little north of the Rural Cemetery.


Griffin street, [S. E. ] from Third street east to the Friends Burying Ground.


Grinnell street, [ S. ] from the river west, across County.


Grove street, [S. W.] between Bedford and Hawthorn, extending from Orchard street westerly.


Hamilton street, [E. ] from North Water street east to Rotch's wharf, on the south side of the Merchants Bank.


Harrison street, [S. W. ] next west of Dartmouth street and extends from Hickory street southerly to Oak street.


Haskins' Corner, the corner formed by the intersection of the north end of the Noel Taber road with the North Road ; and about one mile north of Cannonville.


Hawthorn street, [S. W. ] from County street west, opening opposite 104 County. Numbers commence at County.
