LOCALITIES OF INTEREST

IN AND ABOUT THE CITY.

BELLEVILLE. This name was many years ago given to a spot on the bank of the Acush- net river, about one mile south of the Acushnet village.

BROOKLAWN PARK. Acu- shnet ave. near Howard ave.

BUTTONWOOD CYCLE

TRACK. Chepachet lane. A wood track of one-fourth of a mile for cycling meets.

CITY COMMON. This beau- tiful spot is in the north part of the city, and is bounded by County, Purchase, Pope and Pearl streets. A very hand- some monument, erected by the city, at a cost of about $13,000, as a memorial to the soldiers and sailors who lost their lives during the war of the Rebellion, is located here.

CLARK'S POINT. This point forms the southerly part of the city. It has the waters of the Acushnet river on the east, and of Clark's Cove on the west.

59

LOCALITIES OF INTEREST

Its length is about two miles. At its southerly extremity on the river side is a large tract of land belonging to the United States; at the extremity of the point is Fort Rodman. Around this point, a distance of about four miles, is a' road not sur- passed by any public drive in this country. It is called East and West French avenues, com- mencing at Cove street and fol- low's the shore thence along the western, southern and east- ern boundaries of the point, un- til it terminates in the street, where it has its beginning. It is eighty feet wide, smooth and level, and in its course com- mands a series of views of sur- passing loveliness and beauty. The cove, the bay, the river, the shores, the islands and ledges, the lighthouses, steamers and sailing craft of every descrip- tion, the city on the one side, its sister town of Fairhaven on the other and the noble bridge between, constitute a series of views which render a ride or a walk over this road most de- lightful and attractive. The City Farm and Almshouse is lo- cated on Clark's Point.

CLIFFORD. A settlement with a post office of the same name about three miles north of Acushnet.

CRAPO PARK. On Hickory, Ward and Clay streets. Not officially named, and subject to change.

DOGFISH BAR. The collec- tion of houses near the foot of Coggeshall street is often called by this name, which designates a shoal in the river near by. A bridge crosses the river at this place for Fairhaven.

"DOWN TOWN." The sec- tion bounded by Union, Sixth, Elm and N. Water streets may be regarded as the business cen- tre.

.

FOUR CORNERS. The space formed by the intersection of N. Water, S. Water and Union streets. This has been a some- what noted spot in our local

history. Near this was erected the first village house, and it was long regarded as a business centre.

GERMANTOWN. The vici- nity of Church street, first set- tled mostly by Germans.

HOWLAND VILLAGE. End Bolton road and Orchard street, S. This is a very creditable vil- lage of houses owned by the Howland Mills Corp.

.JESSEVILLE. Part of Mt. Pleasant and its eastern slope, near Ashland and Linden streets. Named for Jesse Reynolds, a for- mer resident.

KENERSONVILLE. West of Purchase street, from Clark, to Cedar Grove street. Named for one of the first settlers.

MARSH (THE). ~ The low dis- trict east of S. Water and south of Howland street.

MOUNT PLEASANT. That portion of our city known by this name is in the northwest part, commencing at Robeson street. Here are some beautiful private residences, and the view which includes the river, the harbor, the bay, and adjoining shores, villages and islands, is one of the finest in the country. NORTH END. Purchase street, north of the Common. Since 1878 has become an impor- tant business locality.

OAK GROVE CEMETERY. Parker street, beyond Park, in the west part of the city, con- taining 26 acres. A pretty well kept place.

OLYMPIC FIELD. Chepach- et lane, where base ball and other sports take place.

RIVERSIDE PARK. Foot of Phillips ave. next Acushnet river.

RIVERVIEW PARK. On Acushnet ave. south side of Nash road.

ROCKDALE. Is about one mile north of Cannonville, on Rockdale avenue. The only quarry of any size near the city, is located here.

60

DISTANCES, QUARANTINE, CEMETERIES

SHAWMUT. This is a small village located four miles north- west of City Hall. Evergreen Trotting Park is located here. Until the recent establishment of its post office, it was known as Plainville.

SMOKING ROCKS. A rocky point on the river near Palmer's Island, where it is said the Indians held council fires. Now on the Potomska Mill premises.

TOBEYS POND. A beautiful sheet of water of about 60 acres, in the extreme northern part of the city. Its surface is 92 feet above the level of the city. Sometimes called Sassaquin's pond, from an Indian who lived near it.

TURNERVILLE. Vicinity of Shawmut ave. and Durfee street. Named for an early settler.

WINTERVILLE. The name given to a small collection of houses at the west of Rural cemetery, on Winterville road. At one time this was quite a flourishing settlement, but is stated to be about one half as large as it was in 1868, owing to the lack of road communications. Added to New Bedford from Dartmouth in May, 1888.

WOODLAWN. The name generally given to Sears Grove, on French ave. half a mile south of the Orphan's Home. /
