Rockland. August, 1862, aged 20, enlisted as a private in Tenth Vermont Vol. Infantry. Appointed corporal and detailed as one of color guard In July, 1863, was on recruiting service in Ver mont. While there ordered before Examining Board, Major-Gen. Casey, President, for examination for a commission in colored troops, and received commission as captain October 27, 1863, and assigned to Seventh Regt. U. S. Colored Troops. Remained at Camp Stanton, Maryland, until March, 1864. when the brigade, of which the Seventh Regiment was part, went to Florida. Later the Seventh returned to Virginia. and in October Captain Rice was appointed Acting Assistant Inspector General of ist Brigade, 2d Division, 25th Army Corps. Participated in engagements in fall of '64 and spring of '65 about Richmond and Petersburg. Was in the last engagement and at Appomattox at the surrender of Lee. Shortly after this Col. Rice was brevetted Major and Lieutenant- Colonel for "gallant and meritorious services." With the 25th Army Corps went to Texas. Captain Rice, soon after landing at Indianola, received appointment of A A. Inspector-General of District of Victoria. A few months later same appointment for Central District of Texas, headquarters at San Antonio. The last six months of his stay in Texas was on the staff of Maj. Gen. Heintzelman. October, 1866, command was mustered out of United States service at Baltimore, Md.
