Article 16. Voted that the sum of $1,000.00 be appro- priated and assessed and that the Treasurer with the appro- val of the Selectmen be and hereby is authorized to borrow the sum of $3,000.00 and issue notes therefore payable one thousand dollars annually with interest for the purpose of pur- chasing, for a playground, a piece of land in Cochituate Vill- age known as Griffin's Field containing approximately four acres bounded on the north by West Plain St., on the west by Pemberton Road and on the South by Bradford Street. Vote Yes 60, No 0).

Article 18. Voted to appropriate and assess $1,000.00 to rebuild and improve Tower Hill Road as ordered by the County Commissioners, and that the Selectmen be requested to interview the County Commissioners and ask for their fin- anical assistance in carrying out the provisions of their de- cree.


Article 19. Voted that the town accept the following bequests for the purposes stated :


$100.00 Received from Mrs. Marion W. Cutting, to be kown as the "William B. Braman Fund," income from which to be used for the perpetual care of the William B. Braman Lot, No. 211 in the North Cemetery.


$100.00 Received from the Estate of Mrs. Betsey W. Moore, to be known as the "Francis Moore Fund." income from which to be used for the perpetual care of the Francis Moore Lot, No. 174, in the North Cemetery.


$100.00 Received from the Edmund Rice 1638 Associa- tion to be known as the "Edmund Rice Fund," income from which to be used for the perpetual care of the Edmund Rice Memorial Stone in the North Cemetery and for flowers on Memorial Day.


$100.00 Received from Mrs. Ira Underwood, to be known as the "Ira Underwood Fund," income from which to be used for the perpetual care of the Ira Underwood Lot, No. 59, Sec. A, in Lake View Cemetery.

Article 23. Voted that the town authorize the Wayland Water Committee to spend a sum of money not exceeding $500.00 for further investigation for a Water Supply as re- commended by the State Department of Health, said sum of money to be taken from the Water rates.

Article 26. Voted to pay $7.00 per day for a double team, including one man as usually interpreted.


Article 27. Voted to appropriate and assess a sum of money not to exceed $?00.00 to build a sidewalk on the south- erly side of Plain Street. Cochituate, from land of Dana H. Elkins, to street leading to Shore Acres.

SELECTMEN'S REPORT


The Selectmen have the honor to submit the following report for the year ending December 31, 1919.


APPOINTMENTS


The board has made the usual appointments as required by law. A list of these appointments under the heading Officers of the Town of Wayland in this report.


HIGHWAYS, OILING, ETC.


Concord Road, Pond Street, Cochituate Road and Sud- bury Road has been repaired and oiled during the past year under the direction of the State Engineer. The Highway Commission and County Commisioner each allotting ($1,600) Sixteen hundred dollars for the work.


MAIN STREET, COCHITUATE


During the past year about ?? 0 feet of road in the village of Cochituate has been rebuilt at a cost of $6,107.31. This work was done under the direction of the State Engineer, Mr. Fairbank, Surveyor of Highways doing the grading and drainage


The paving was contracted to the Framingham Construc- tion and Supply Company for ($1.58) one dollar and fifty eights cents per square yard, they being the only bidders for this work. The State and County allotted ($2,000) two thousand dollars. The past year the State and County has allotted for oiling and repairing highways in this town the sum of ($7,450) seven thousand four hundred and fifty dol- lars.

TOWER HILL ROAD


The work of relocating and repairing Tower Hill Road as ordered by the County Commissioners has been done as far as this appropriation for this work would admit. The County Commissioners allotted ($250) two hundred and fifty dollars for this work. $1,095.54 has been expended for this work.


The case of Annie Lane against the Town to recover taxes paid under protesst on the ground that said taxes had already been paid, the Jury rendered a verdict against the Town for $400.00. This verdict was rendered in 1910. This case by the advice of Counsel has been settled for the sum of $250.00 in full for damages, interest and all costs to date (May 1, 1919.)
