At a special town meeting held December 17, 1916 the Special Investi- sating Committee for the consolidation of schools in Leverett was dissolved. A new committee to be known as the Consolidated School Building Committee was appointed and consists of the members of the former Investigating Committee, the Board of Selectmen and the Superintendent of Schools.

At this meeting it was voted to raise and appropriate a sum of money not to exceed $1500, for the purchase of land owned by Mrs. Fred Korrison for a school site. The purchase of this land was subsequently made for a sum of $1250.

At the special town meeting it was voted to have the Building Committee act upon the following recommendations of the Investigating Committee:

a) To hire an architect to draw up suitable plans for the school. b) The Selectment, through our district senator to petition the General Court for permission to borrow the sum of $16,000 outside our legal debt limit.

c ) That application be made to the Federal Works Agency for a sum of money to cover the cost of school plans, this money being available to cities and towns for advance planning of community projects.

Accordingly, the services of Wr. Bernhard Dirks were secured to draw up the plans for the school. At a meeting of the committee in February of this year, preliminary plans were viewed and accepted, Mr. Dirks then being instructed to complete the plans and submit them for final approval.

State Senator Mahar filed a petition with the General Court to permit the Town of Leverett to borrow a sum of money not to exceed $16,000 outside our debt limit. The General Court has passed favorably on this petition.

An application was filed with the Federal Works Agency for a sum of $3000 tocover the advance plans for a consolidated school.

On March 18 the Emergency Finance Board of the Commonwealth voted unanimously to approve the application. On April 4 the Federal Works Agency also approved the application and has sent an initial advance of $1500. This amount has been paid to Mir. Dirks as part payment for his work.

While Mr. Dirks hasn't quite finished his work on the plans, the com- mit tee felt enough progress had been made to permit Mr. Dirks to exhibit these plans and a model of the school.

At the annual town meeting last February a sum of $800 was appro- priated toward the construction of an athletic field. After consulting several dirt moving contractors, Mr. Stephen Puffer, Jr. was hired to do the grading necessary.
