THIRTY-FIFTH ANNUAL REPORT

OF THE

TOWN OFFICERS

OF

SOUTH SCITUATE

FOR THE

YEAR ENDING JANUARY 1,

1885.

EMBRACING THOSE OF THE

SELECTMEN, ASSESSORS, OVERSEERS OF THE POOR, TREASURER, COLLECTOR, SURVEYORS OF HIGHWAYS, TOWN CLERK, AND SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

HINGHAM: FRED H. MILLER, Printer. 1885.

REPORT OF THE SELECTMEN.

The Selectmen submit for your consideration the thirty-fifth an- nual report of the financial condition of the town, January 1, 1885.

REPAIRS OF HIGHWAYS.

Of the appropriation of $2,000 for ordinary repairs of highways, $1,700 was appropriated to the several districts, and $300 remained in the hands of the Selectmen for extra repairs. Nearly all of this amount was finally apportioned to the several surveyors, in such sums as they thought the needs of their districts required, and the amounts expended as directed by the Selectmen.

REPAIRS OF PARKER AND CROSS STREETS.

The cost for the completion of the repairs on these streets has been $153.59. They are now in good condition, and, we think, compare favorably with those in other sections of the town.

CENTRAL STREET.

As by a vote of the town, the building of the new section of this street (from the house of C. W. Sparrell to that of J. W. Pinkham) has been completed at a cost of $444.76. Another section near the Scituate line, for which no appropriation was made, has been built as by orders of the County Commissioners, but the latter expense is included in the surveyor's account of labor in District No. 4.

SUPPORT OF POOR.

There has been paid on account of poor in the Almshouse $1,419.87, the average number of inmates being much larger than last year. . The interior of the house has been a model of neatness, the inmates treated kindly and the sick and helpless well cared for. The increase of expense to poor outside of Almshouse is caused

4

on account of the number of inmates in the Taunton Insane Asylum, and there seems to be no prospect at the present time that the expense will be less.

TAXES AND COLLECTION OF THE SAME.

On account of the resignation of James L. Litchfield, the col- lector chosen by the town at its annual meeting, the Selectmen appointed Andrew J. Litchfield collector pro tem., he first furnishing a satisfactory bond in the sum of $5,000, the rate per cent. agreed upon being one per cent. of the tax levy. And we believe that by our new departure we have at last entered upon the best method of collecting our taxes, as the several reports of the Collector and Treasurer will show.

NEW TOWN HALL.

As will be seen by the body of the report, the Selectmen have paid bills, as approved by the building committees, amounting to $2,964.87. They have also awarded W. P. Brooks $150 for land taken for a Town Hall lot, which amount remains in the hands of the Treasurer, subject to his order.
