REPORT

OF THE COMMITTEE CHOSEN TO GRADE THE GROUNDS

AROUND THE SOLDIERS' MONUMENT.

R. P. Briggs was chosen by the town, C. W. Sparrell and Waldo Jones by the ladies' sewing societies, as the committee to have charge of the work. The amount expended for labor and material has been $890. Sixty-five tons of stone was purchased of the Rock- port Granite Company. C. W. Howland, of Rockland, was employed to draft the plan of the ground. There has been received by the committee the appropriation of $600 made by the town at the annual meeting, also $300 from the two ladies' sewing societies, and we would respectfully report that we have sufficient funds in our hands for the completion of the work the coming spring.

Respectfully,

R. P. BRIGGS, For the Committee.

SCHOOL REPORT.

At the annual meeting of the town, in March last, Mrs. E. T. Jacobs was re-elected to the School Board, and organization resulted as follows : Mr. E. T. Fogg was chosen chairman, and Mrs. E. T. Jacobs, secretary. Miss M. W. Brooks, who was elected a year ago last March, resigned to accept the offer of the school for the fall term in District No. 1 ; as this caused a vacancy in the School Board, it was necessary for the selectmen and remaining committee to appoint some one. The choice of Mr Samuel Tolman being made, he was notified and accepted. We have now nine schools, with nine teachers in the employ of the town. The past year has been an unusual one in the way of changes in our corps of teachers. District No. 1. Grammar and Primary, - Mr. J. J. Prentiss re- signed at the end of the spring term, and Miss Martha W. Brooks was appointed to the position. Miss Sarah B. Jacobs tendered her resignation, to accept a school which was offered her in Han- over, and Mrs. Lina F. Stowell was appointed to the vacancy. No. 2, Grammar and Primary, -the winter term was taught by Mr. J. W. Smith ; Primary by Miss Sophronia L. Curtis. The spring term opened with one school, taught by Mrs. Margaret B. Rice ; for the fall term, Miss A. Eudora Gardner, was appointed to fill the vacancy occasioned ¿by the resignation of Mrs. Rice. No 3, Primary School, - winter term taught by Miss Mary A.
