Home for Friendless Women and Children-These two institutions were formerly conducted under one roof at 62 Union, a corporation for this pur- pose having been organized in 1865, by ladies interested in the reform of fallen women, the relief of the needy, and the care of destitute chil- dren.

In 1871 the Home for Children was built on Buck- ingham; after which time the house on Union was used for the reception of adults only, or for mothers with infants. The need of a different home for the work for friendless women had long been felt and strongly urged and the present one on William was built and occupied October 21, 1897.

A meeting of the Board of Managers is held at the Homes alternately, once in two weeks, on Friday afternoons.

The Salvation Army, Springfield Corps, No. 1- (Incorporated). Reorganized 1891. Headquar- ters, Salvation Army Building, 8-18 Stearns sq. Adjt. Commanding Officer, J. H. Bloethe. Sergt. Major, Charles Woodard. Chairman of Advi- sory Board, George M. Hendee. V. Chairman, Horace A. Moses. Sec and Treas, Harry G. Fisk. Evangelical services at 8 every night but Mon., Sun at 3, and 8 p. m. Sunday School at 1.30 p. m.

The object of the Salvation Army is to carry the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ to the thousands who today never darken the doors of the places of worship and to bring the Bible message to the outcast of society, whether in prison or brothel or any place harboring vice, iniquity or intem- perance.

When a hungry man is given a meal, or a worker visiting a slum home with a basket of life's necessities, Thanksgiving or Xmas dinners given to the poor, it is not only to relieve an immediate need, it is for a higher purpose of bringing them the message of the Gospel of Light and Love, that the recipient of the humble gifts may think of Him who was rich, but for our sakes became poor and took upon Himself the form of man, and by paying the debt of sin made it possible for us to be reconciled with the Father by the gift of Himself.

Our constant effort is to help others to help themselves; eventually they too become helpers to others.
