(J. J. Sullivan's Monster Moving Van)

This efficient fleet of Sulli-Vans is the largest in New England outside of Boston, and the enormous Sulli-Vans are as familiar to the inhabitants of New York, Philadelphia, Washington and a score of other distant cities as they are to the people of Springfield themselves. "Gangway for the Sulli-Van!" is a catch phrase known Atlanta to Portland. No town is too far away to be reached by a Sulli-Van.

The difference between

Reference and

Creative media

is their direction

The seller's efforts to stimulate demand is well carried by outgoing, extensive, display media, but-

he should remember that initiative rests with the buyer, and when the hunt for the goods begins, creative media which may have built up the demand, are at a disad- vantage.

It is the difference between coming and going.

The creative advertising is going after the prospect, to make him want to buy, but when you have him coming, reference media should be used to connect the demand with the local supply. Every effort should be made to direct the demand to the goods advertised, at the point where they may be seen.

It is here that reference media, directories, find their logical place in the cycle of the sale.

DESCRIPTION

OF THE

ATTRACTIONS, ADVANTAGES, AND RESOURCES OF

SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS

Third City in Population, Second in Assessed Valuation in Massachusetts.

FURNISHED BY THE

SPRINGFIELD CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, MASSACHUSETTS

Springfield is the center of a spider's web, with many lines of rail- roads leading to it. The city is 99 miles from Boston, 136 from New York City, and 103 from Albany, with many prosperous towns and cities lying in between. Many of the people living in these towns and cities patronize Springfield stores so that Springfield, with a population of 144,000 (estimated) is the trading center for 700,000. Railroads, trolleys, and good highways bring the trade to the city, and the stores and shops are always busy and prosperous.

SPRINGFIELD-THE CITY OF SERVICE

Springfield is the natural center of distribution for New England. It has been compared a great many times to Western cities in its being a ive wire, and because of the energy and activity of its wide-awake citi- zens. One of the finest examples of their loyalty to the city is the Muni- cipal Group which stands as a testimony to the generosity and civic bride of the citizens.

SPRINGFIELD IS FAMOUS

Springfield is famous as the home of the Springfield Armory, with its great history, both past and present. The Springfield Rifle is known hroughout the world. Likewise Springfield has other world-wide known ndustries, such as the G. & C. Merriam Company, publishers of Webster's Dictionary; National Equipment Company, candy machine manufacturers; East Springfield branch of the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company, fractional horse-power motors, radio equipment; Hendee Man- facturing Company, Indian Motocycle manufacturers; Wason Manufac- uring Company, steam and electric cars; Kibbe Bros., confectionery manufacturers; Milton Bradley Company, kindergarten supplies and

games; Handy Chocolate Company, manufacturers of sweet chocolate; Smith & Wesson, manufacturers of revolvers; and Rolls-Royce of America (a branch of the noted English firm) manufacturers of auto- mobiles, a recent addition to Springfield's industries. Springfield is the home of skilled mechanics.

There are 540 industries, producing 385 different products, located in metropolitan Springfield. Invested manufacturing capital $100,000,000. Annual value of manufacturing produce over $150,000,000. Annual pay roll $40,000,000.

BEAUTY AND ATTRACTIONS OF THE CITY

Springfield is known as "The City of Homes," and rightly can claim this title from many other cities described in the same way, for the beauti- ful parks (951.96 acres) and boulevards in the city, with the stately homes under great trees, are indeed charming. Forest Park, given to the city through the munificence of E. H. Barney and many other generous citizens, with an area of 755.87 acres, is one of the finest public parks in the country. The drives in and around Springfield are many and beautiful.

THE HISTORY OF SPRINGFIELD

William Pynchon and a band of brave followers founded Springfield in 1636, and on May 14 the town was organized. The early days involved many vicissitudes with the Indians, picturesque incidents, and affairs of marked bravery. In 1647 a large addition was made to the territory of Springfield by the General Court so that the city included Westfield, Suf- field, some of Southwick, West Springfield, Holyoke, Agawam, Chicopee, Enfield, Wilbraham, Somers, Ludlow, Longmeadow, and Hampden, but since then these have become independent cities and towns, although all were originally a part of Springfield.

In 1672 the village of Springfield was burned by Indians, but, Phoenix- like, arose.

In 1812 the southern part of Old Hampshire County was named Hamp- den and Springfield became a shire town. A Court House was erected in the town in 1821. On May 25, 1852, Springfield, with a population of 12,500, was incorporated as a city, and on May 25, 1886, the city celebrated its 250th anniversary; on May 25, 1911, in a delightful manner the 275th anniversary was likewise celebrated. The spirit of ancient and modern Springfield is embodied in the world-famous statue of Deacon Samuel Chapin, by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, which stands at the corner of Chest- nut and State streets.

AS AN EDUCATIONAL CENTER

Springfield is noted as second to none in the excellence of its public schools. With three High Schools, a Vocational School, a large number of

189

SPRINGFIELD (1923) DIRECTORY

grade and private schools, also parochial schools, it maintains a high standard. There are 44 public schools in the city, including three High Schools and a Vocational School. The International Y. M. C. A. College and the American International College are also located in this city.

Like all New England cities it has many churches-65 churches and religious societies-and many noteworthy ones among them.

Springfield is the home of the Hampden County Improvement League, which was organized in 1913 by a committee of the Springfield Chamber of Commerce for the purpose of creating a better understanding between the business man and the farmer.

It is also the home of the Eastern States Agricultural and Industrial Exposition (another outgrowth of the Chamber of Commerce activities, organized in 1916) which organization has already gained a country-wide reputation. The attendance at the exposition of 1922 was 257,000.
