The Mortality of Advertising

THE waste basket is the grave of millions of dol- lars worth of advertising every year. Keep YOUR ad- vertising out of the waste bas- ket by using mediums that are not thrown away. The City Directory is on the job 365 days in the year and no level headed man will think of the waste basket and the City Directory at the same time

1948-THE PRICE & LEE CO.'S

History of Chicopee

THE City of Chicopee, bordered by the Connecticut, and crossed by the Chicopee River, has an area of over 25 square miles, contains five separate divisions, with a population of 44,626 in 1945. The name Chicopee was given to the river long before the white man came, and is an Indian word meaning "raging, violent water".

From 1641 to 1848 this section belonged to the town of Springfield, and as far as known, no settlers lived here until about 1656. Land from "one mile south of the Chicopee River to the Willimansett Brook" was deeded to William Pyncheon of Springfield by the Indians in 1641. Samuel Chapin, who came to Springfield late in 1642, bought two "parsels", gave one, in what is now Chicopee Street, to his son Japhet, and the other to a son, Henry, near the junction of West and Center Streets. By 1660, other young men of the Springfield families received grants as far east as Berchams Bend, Chicopee Falls, and the settlement of the Northern Villages was a fact. Forests were cut, houses built, land enltivated, and small industries developed.

The First Church on old Chicopee Street was formed in 1751, the building finished in 1752; by another one hundred years ten churches, separate from Springfield, were organized. When the mother town desired to become a city, the citizens of these northern sections appealed to the General Court of Mas- sachusetts for a right to be incorporated as a separate township. This peti- tion was granted, April 29, 1848, which date is celebrated this year. By 1890 Chicopee was large enough to have a City Charter, and the first Mayor, George S. Taylor, was inaugurated, Jan. 1, 1891.
