In 1825, Boston capitalists, attracted by the fine water power, built cot- ton mills, a dam, and the Canal in 1829. The Ames brothers brought their foundry to Chicopee Falls, moving to Cabotville (Chicopee Center), a few years later. Many famous industries have grown up here, but not all have remained. The Dwight Cotton Mills moved to Alabama, 1927. Other products are : guns, camion, bronze bells and statues, swords, silverware, agricultural implements, knitting machines, underwear, rubber goods, automobiles, sport- ing goods.

Chicopee was chosen in 1939 as the home of the U.S. Army North East- ern Air Base, now turned over to the Air Transport Command, one of the largest air bases in the East.

General Arthur MacArthur was born in Chicopee Falls, Mary Garden, Forest Lamont, George Reardon, Sylvia Zaremba, Charles O'Connell. and other musicians, are connected with Chicopee.

One Massachusetts Governor, George D. Robinson, lived here.
