STREETS, PLACES, SQUARES, ETC.
THE list which follows has been carefully prepared, and embraces changes lately made by the city government in the names and locations of the public streets. Other altera- tions may seem desirable and proper; but due regard should be had for residents and property holders concerned, whose titles may become confused, if old and familiar highways and avenues are made strange by a new christening.
A little study of our map, in connection with this list, will acquaint the reader with many varied and interesting features of the entire city ; and besides being most useful in business, will add to the pleasure of the daily drive or walk, or bring to the children a better knowledge of home geography. The Springfield Directory
FOR 1871-2,
WILL, the publishers believe, be found especially full and valu- able. With the names of all householders, business or professional men and women, are given, in most cases, their new street numbers. Thus the exact location of a store, office, shop, front door of resi- dence, or public entrance up stairs, is indicated plainly, and can be found at once. No need of stopping to ask and answer questions, and wait upon door-bells. Simply look in the Directory. Just now, of course, when old numbers are being removed and new ones put on, people are sometimes perplexed, and can not tell, perhaps, what their own number or their neighbor's is, until they see the Directory. But once accustomed to the change, and its advantages will abun- dantly compensate for a little temporary inconvenience.
