Library and Museum of Natural History.

Located in new Library Building on State street, above Chestnut, and open daily. The number of volumes, June 1, 1871, was 30,- 159, exclusive of unbound pamphlets. Over 2,500 volumes have been added the past year. The Directors intend to purchase all the new works of popular interest as they appear, and are also continually adding to the Library standard works of permanent value in the various departments of litera- ture, science and art. Subscribers can draw

the volumes at once, and exchange them every day at the library hours.

Officers-President, John L. King ; Vice- President, Daniel L. Harris ; Secretary, William Rice; Treasurer, J. D. Safford ; Directors, George Bliss, Chester W. Chapin, J. M. Thompson, George Walker, Charles Merriam, J. G. Holland, James Kirkham, E. W. Bond, John B. Stebbins, Samuel Bowles ; Auditors, Charles O. Chapin, R. F. Hawkins. Librarian, Rev. Wm. Rice.

The new Library building (see illustration on opposite page,) ranks among our finest public buildings, and cost, with the land, about $100,000. Its architecture is the mod- ern adaptation of the gothic, prevalent dur- ing the middle ages on the continent of Eu- rope, and in England now, and known as the "mediæval revival." The building stands 60 feet back from the sidewalk and 12 or 14 feet above the level of the street. It is 100 feet long and 65 wide. The ma- terials are brick, with trimmings of richly cut and carved light freestone from the Am- herst quarries of Ohio, the exterior of the basement being of Monson granite. Two flights of broad granite steps, terminating in an arched stone porch, lead to the en- trance hall, on the first floor, 20 feet wide, extending across the entire building. On the right of this is a room for the Museum, 30 by 50 feet, a similiar room on the left for a reading room, and beyond is the Librari- an's room. Above the first floor is the Li- brary proper, with a clear, open space in the center, 60 feet long, 20 wide, and nearly 50 high. A series of columns with con- necting arches surround this spaceway, and from their capitals spring arched ribs, which meet under the roof above. From these columns radiate in every direction the alcoves and galleries of the Library. Each alcove is 17 feet high, and the galleries extend around the room. Light is admit- ted through large central sky-lights, 50 feet long, and also by windows in the alcoves, two hot-air furnaces warm the building, and ven- tilation is effectually secured. George Hatlı- orne of New York was the architect.

During the past year, the Library has been rearranged in its new quarters, and a complete catalogue made and published. The latter is prepared on the dictionary plan, and involved in its preparation a good deal of labor, and a wide acquaintance with books and authors. Seventy thousand slips

Bryant, who is a daughter of Springfield, and wlio sent, besides, a gift of $500 in money, in addition to liberal donations previously made to the permanent funds of the City Library Association. Mention should be made, also, of the law library of Col. John Worth- ington, presented by Mrs. Josiah Hooker,- a valuable collection of books of special in- terest to antiquarians.

MUSEUM-Curators, R. B. Hildretlı, C. A. Emery, C. W. Bennett, J. A. Allen, and Solomon Stebbins. The Museum is now closed for re-arrangement in the new Library building. This institution originated in 1860 with the Library Association, and oc- cupied two rooms in the City Hall. It has about 1,500 species and upwards of 3,800 specimens of shells, classified by Dr. Geo. A. Otis, formerly surgeon of the 27th Mas- sachusetts Regiment; also 9,000 specimens of insects ; 900 specimens of stuffed birds ; 120 stuffed quadrupeds, including two enor- mous wildcats, killed in this county ; 115 species of fish and reptiles ; small cabinets of coral and crustacea ; an extensive miner- alogical cabinet ; a large and very curious collection of fossils ; numerous Indian and foreign antiquities, and several flags and various other trophies captured from the Southern rebels by our home troops. Ad- ditions are frequently made by the generosity of our citizens. Valuable collections were received the past year from Rev. H. J. Bruce, of India, formerly of this city. Do- nations for the Library or Museum may be left with the Librarian, Rev. William Rice.
