FIRE DEPARTMENT
The force at present numbers 187 men as follows: One chief, one deputy chief, two district chiefs, superintendent of fire alarm telegraph, one clerk, twenty-two captains, twenty-four lieu- tenants, six engineers, two linemen, two operators, one hundred and twenty-two hose and laddermen and three callmen; also the force at the United States Armory in case of emergency. One company located at Indian Orchard is not available for city fires. There are one hundred and eighty-four permanent men employed, including chief, deputy chief, two district chiefs and superin- tendent of fire alarm. The whole apparatus of the department at present consists of four chiefs' cars, two auxiliary squad cars, one motor runabout and motor truck for fire alarm use, two motor pumping engines, three steam engines, two horse-drawn, one tractor- drawn; fifteen hose wagons, thirteen in service and two in reserve, all motor driven; seven hook and ladder trucks, five motor-driven and two horse-drawn, water tower, thirteen horses, twenty-six thousand feet of two and one-half inch cotton rubber-lined hose, three thousand feet of one inch rubber chemical hose, thirty-six hand fire extinguishers, six hundred feet of one inch rubber hose, four exercise wagons, eleven sleighs, fire alarm telegraph and telephone appa- ratus; also, in reserve, one hand hose carriage, and the United States Armory department, consisting of one first-class steam engine, two horse hose carts, and one thousand feet of good cotton rubber- lined hose, which, by the courtesy of the commandant, can be called into service in an emergency.
