DESCRIPTION
OF THE
Attractions, Advantages, and Resources of SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS
FURNISHED BY THE
Springfield Board of Trade, Massachusetts
Springfield is the center of a spider's web, with many lines of railroads leading to it. The city is 99 miles from Boston, 136 from New York City, and 103 from Albany, with many prosperous towns and cities lying in between. Many of the people living in these towns and cities patronize Springfield stores so that Springfield, with a population of 105,000, is the trading center for 600,000. Railroads, trolleys, and good highways bring the trade to the city, and the stores and shops are always busy and prosperous.
Springfield-the Magnet City
Springfield is known as "The Magnet City" because of its at- traction. It has been compared a great many times to Western cities in its being a live wire, and because of the energy and ac- tivity of its wide-awake citizens. One of the finest examples of their loyalty to the city is the Municipal Group which recently has been completed, and which stands as a testimony to the generosity and civic pride of the citizens.
Springfield Is Famous
Springfield is famous as the home of the Springfield Armory, with its great history, both past and present. The Springfield Rifle is known throughout the world. Likewise Springfield has other world-wide known industries, such as the G. & C. Merriam Company, publishers of Webster's Dictionary; Barney & Berry, Inc., manufacturers of the Barney & Berry skates; National Equip- ment Company, candy machine manufacturers; New England Westinghouse Company, fire arms manufacturers; Hendee Manu-
facturing Company, Indian Motocycle manufacturers; and Smith & Wesson, manufacturers of revolvers.
Beauty and Attractions of the City
Springfield is known as "The City of Homes," and rightly can claim this title from many other cities described in the same way, for the beautiful parks (589.64 acres) and boulevards in the city, with the stately homes under great trees, are indeed charming. Forest Park, given to the city through the munificence of E. H. Barney and many other generous citizens, with an area of 476 acres, is one of the finest public parks in the country. The drives in and around Springfield are also pleasant.
The History of Springfield
William Pynchon and a band of brave followers founded Spring- field in 1636, and on May 14 the town was organized. The early days involved many vicissitudes with the Indians, picturesque incidents, and affairs of marked bravery. In 1647 a large addition was made to the territory of Springfield by the General Court so that the city included Westfield, Suffield, some of Southwick, West Springfield, Holyoke, Agawam, Chicopee, Enfield, Wilbraham, Somers, Ludlow, Longmeadow, and Hampden, but since then these have become independent cities and towns, although all were originally a part of Springfield.
In 1647 the village of Springfield was burned by marauding In- dians, but, Phœnix-like, arose.
In 1812 the southern part of Old Hampshire County was named Hampden and Springfield became a shire town. A Court House was erected in the town in 1821. On May 25, 1852, Springfield, with a population of 12,500, was incorporated as a city, and on May 25, 1886, the city celebrated its 250th anniversary; on May 25, 1911, in a delightful manner the 275th anniversary was likewise celebrated. The spirit of ancient and modern Springfield is em- bodied in the world-famous statue of Deacon Samuel Chapin, by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, which stands at the corner of Chestnut and State streets.
As an Educational Center
Springfield is noted as second to none in the excellence of its public schools. With three High Schools and a great many grade and private schools it maintains a high standard. There are 39
1
public schools in the city. The International Y. M. C. A. College and the American International College are also located in this city.
Like all New England cities it has many churches-63 in all- and many noteworthy ones among them.
Public Buildings
The principal public buildings in Springfield are the new Munic- ipal Group; the new Public Library; Springfield Art Museum; Museum of National History; Connecticut Valley Historical Society; Springfield Armory; Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Com- pany building; Springfield Fire & Marine Insurance Company building; the Law Courts; the Springfield Republican; the three High School buildings; Stearns Building; Hotel Kimball, and the Myrick Building (the headquarters of the Springfield Board of Trade).
Social Advantages
The social advantages are many, as Springfield is a very sociable place. There are various charities in this city which are very active, and the club life is indeed delightful. The Y. M. C. A. and the Y. W. C. A. occupy excellent buildings; the Boys' Club, an institution offering social recreation to over 1000 boys, is splendid for youthful exuberance; the Women's Club; the Nayasset Club, which is one of the leading men's clubs of New England; the newly organized Colony Club, which is to be located in the million dollar residence of the late D. B. Wesson; the Winthrop Club, and the Country Club of Springfield, besides many literary and social clubs, make the city a pleasant place in which to live as well as to work.
Newspapers and Other Publications
The principal newspapers of Springfield are the Springfield Re- publican, with an international reputation; the Springfield Union, which is doing much towards the upbuilding of Springfield and western New England; the Springfield Daily News, and the Spring- field Homestead. All of these papers are of a high grade, and the city is fortunate indeed in having them published here.
Transportation Facilities
The transportation facilities of Springfield are very fine indeed. There are 198 trains a day going in and out of the city on the various lines of railroads which enter here.

Springfield Board of Trade
The Springfield Board of Trade is one of the principal commer- cial organizations of its kind in the United States. It holds a national reputation for excellence. It has over 1,300 members, all of whom are of the city's best citizens. It has paid employees to the number of eight, and, besides the regular Board of Trade department, it maintains a Traffic Bureau for the advancement of all claims, shipments, etc., with the railroads, and a Credit-Report- ing and Collection Bureau. It is located in the Myrick Building, where excellent quarters are maintained on the main floor, and where a permanent exhibition of Springfield's manufacturing in- dustries may be seen. Address all inquiries for information to
GEORGE E. FOSS, Secretary.
