The Springfield Hospital-North Chestnut, corner Springfield. Incor- porated December 24, 1883. On No- vember 14, 1886, Dorcas Chapin, widow of Chester W. Chapin, died, bequeath- ing to the corporation $25,000 upon the conditions that a like sum should be contributed, and that the city of Spring- field should give to this corporation its Hospital and equipments. On January 17, 1887, William Merrick of Springfield died, making this corporation his resid- uary legatee. In April, 1887, by popular subscription the sum of $28,444.96 was raised, and in October, 1887, the city of Springfield deeded its Hospital to this corporation, thus complying with the conditions of the will of Dorcas Chapin. May 4, 1889, the hospital was dedicated.
