Report of Planning Board
To the Honorable Board of Selectmen and
Citizens of the Town of Milford:
The Planning Board respectfully submits the follow- ing report for the year ending December 31, 1957.
Bi-monthly meetings were held throughout the year, with the exception of June, July, and August, when one meeting a month was held. There was a noted decline in the number of land developments in the Milford area in 1957 : however. several small subdivisions were considered and approved.
Public hearings were held concerning re-zoning of the areas on both sides of the Cape Road (Route 140) between West Street and Water Street. Following these public hearings it was recommended by the Board that both areas be re-zoned for business purposes. Both areas were subsequently re-zoned as recommended.
We wish to thank our Town Clerk, Catherine L. Coyne for her help and cooperation throughout the year and we also wish to thank all other town officials and citizens who aided the Board during the same period.

Report of the Tree Warden and Insect Pest Control Supt.
To the Honorable Board of Selectmen :
I herewith submit my annual report on the planting, care and removal of trees, removal of brush and the insect pest control program for the year of 1957.
During the year I have cut down fourteen (14) maples, two (2) ash and one (1) butternut tree that were dead and trimmed numerous other trees.
I have also cut down and disposed of sixty six (66) elm trees with the help of a state crew who came in last January and aided me in this work for two weeks.
This year I took samples on seventy four (74) elms, fifty two (52) of which came back from the Shade Tree Laboratory as being diseased and twenty two (22) had negative reports but as these were dead they also will have to be removed. Of these seventy four (74) trees, forty nine (49) will have to be topped before they can be taken down. Since I have received the above report there are about fifteen (15) more elms that have died.
140
During the week of May 23, 1957, my regular spraying program was done in the outlying sections by airplane and intown by the hydraulic pump.
During the week of October 31, 1957, I planted twelve (12) pin oak, twelve (12) sweet gum, five (5) Norway maple, and five (5) sycamore trees.
Brush was removed from all the roads in the outlying sections of the Town.
I wish at this time to express my appreciation to the various other departments of the Town for their co-opera- tion during the year.
Respectfully submitted, MATTHEW P. ANDREANO,
Tree Warden and Insect Pest Control Superintendent

Report of the Board of Sewer Commissioners
To The Citizens of Milford :
We respectfully submit our report on operation, main- tenance and new construction work of the Sewerage Sys- tem of the Town for the year 1957.
.
Collecting System
The new cleaning and flushing equipment purchased during the past few years has made possible more exten- sive and efficient cleaning of sewer lines, coupled with routine flushing operations.
Extensions of the system were limited to completion of the Purchase Street, Dilla and Union Street lines start- ed in 1956. Total length completed in Purchase Street was 1116 feet, making the total length of sewers 32.484 miles. Other requested extensions were postponed pending improvements to the treatment plant scheduled for 1958
143
construction, and the plant will be in condition to handle the sewage from extensions which may be constructed during 1958. Sixty-two (62) additional services were con- nected during the year, with a present total of 2561.
Pumping Stations
Expansion of the system beyond the area which can be served by gravity flow into the present system will re- sult in increased district pumping. The new lift stations serving Dilla Street and the Purchase Street extensions were put into service this year, utilizing ejector equipment removed from the Medway Road station when increased pumping capacity was installed on that station in 1956. The stations are designed so that the equipment in the Purchase Street station can be installed in the Dilla Street station to double its capacity if required in the future, while provisions are made in the Purchase Street station for installation of higher capacity pumps when required by extensions in this area.
Treatment Plant
Improvements at the treatment plant were planned for construction during 1957, but application for Federal Grant under the Pollution Control Act was instituted by the Board, and while the more extensive redesign and proces- sing of the application for funds has delayed construction, the Board has now received notice that the grant has been approvd for approximately $105,000, and construction work will proceed during 1958. Major equipment items have been purchased and delivered to the site so that no serious equip- ment delays are anticipated. Final construction plans are being prepared for submission to the State Health Depart- ment for approval prior to construction. We want to thank the Police, Fire and Highway Dept., and all other Depart- ments for their assistance to our department.
Respectifully submitted, GUIDO SABATINELLI, ROBERT M. BICKFORD, JOSEPH L. De LUCA

Report of the Chief of Police
The Honorable Board of Selectmen and Citizens of Milford
Sgt. John J. McGrath, Director of the Auxiliary Police Unit has continued the fine program for the year 1957. They are a most essential unit in an emergency for with- out their assistance we in the Police Department would be sorely taxed.
Patrolmen Antonio Di Girolaino and Ernest M. Pan- orese were graduated from the Police Officers Training School, sponsored by the Massachusetts Police Chief's As- sociation and connected with the State Police Training School at Framingham, Mass. Since the school has been operating we have had twelve patrolmen graduated, from our total of sixteen patrolmen. We commend the School and hope to continue our policy of sending them to the school.
Sgt. A. Raymond Cross attended a Conference at the Judge Baker Guidance Center where there has been es- tablished a Juvenile Training Institute.
Officer Charles F. McGowan attended the F. B. I. School on Police Administration and Operations held in Boston, Mass.
May we thank your Honorable Board and all Town Departments for the cooperation received during the past year.
Respectifully submitted, WILLIAM F. FITZPATRICK, Chief of Police
