: The above account is as accurate as could be made from the Collector's account; the Collector's book shows neither the date of the payment of taxes, nor the amount of interest paid; no separate account of interest has ever been kept. This omission renders it impossible for the Auditors to ascertain the amount of the interest account in detail.

It also appears that the Collector has paid to the town a larger amount than his books show to have been collected.

The Auditor would recommend that the Collector be required to keep a proper account of money received and the date of its payment, and the amount of interest received on each separate tax.

We would also recommend the town to change the present method of choosing a Collector, believing as we do that the best interest of the town would require that the Collector should receive such compensation as would enable him to devote more time to the business ..

The appropriations made by the town for the monument amount to $3,628.07, the balance being raised by voluntary subscriptions from citizens, and by entertainments at Town Hall, &c. Nearly seven hundred dollars ($700) was expended by the Committee in improvements upon the public grounds. There is a small balance of about $16.00 due Robert D. Hobart for supervision of the work, and also an unadjusted claim of Messrs. H. & J. E. Billings, architects, which your Committee recommend be paid.

The Committee have made no charge for services.

Very respectfully yours,

F. A. HOBART, Chairman.

BRAINTREE, January 27, 1875.

Public Library Report.

BRAINTREE, Feb. 1, 1875.

To the Selectmen.

Gentlemen,-The Trustees of the THAYER PUBLIC LIBRARY, of Brain- tree, respectfully submit, through you, to the town, the following report :-

The Library building was completed during the spring of last year, but on account of the delay incident to procuring books, preparing catalogue, &c., it was not opened to the public until Sept. 1.

The number of books in the Library for general circulation is ten hundred and fifty-three (1053).

This does not include pamphlets and unbound magazines (of which there was quite a collection in Gen. Thayer's private library), nor books in foreign languages, which number over two hundred.

The income from the permanent fund of $10,000 gives us six hundred dol- lars a year, the whole of which is to be applied to the purchase of new books and rebinding old ones.

With this and such donations of books as we may reasonably hope to re- ceive, the Library will soon be amply sufficient to supply the wants of our citizens.

The demand for books, thus far, has greatly exceeded cur expectations. The steady patrons of the Library, young and old, come from all parts of the town, and their number is constantly increasing.

Five hundred and eighty-seven different persons have availed themselves of the privileges of the Library since it was opened, and have drawn out four thousand three hundred and eighty-nine books.

35

The influence for good which such an institution must exert in our town cannot be overestimated.

Thus far the Library has been accessible but two afternoons and one even .. ing in each week; but we shall welcome the time when the public voice compels us to keep its doors constantly open.

The Trustees do not feel called upon to ask any appropriation from the town for the purchase of books; but we earnestly solicit donations of books, pamphlets, &c., from all who feel an interest in the Library.

A statement of our receipts and expenditures is hereto appended.

For the salary of the Librarian and incidental expenses for the ensuing year, we respectfully recommend an appropriation of three hundred and fifty dollars.

ASA FRENCH, F. A. HOBART, N. F. T. HAYDEN, HENRY A. JOHNSON, N. H. HUNT,

Partial Report of Committee on Fire Department.

The appropriation of eight thousand dollars ($8000), made by the town and raised by taxation during the past year, for the purpose of equipping the Fire Department, has been drawn from the treasury, and placed at the disposal of the Committee having that matter in charge. This Committee, not having fully completed their labors, can only make a partial report ; but we have their assurance that the appropriation is amply sufficient for the purpose, and that they will be able to report in full to the town at the adjournment of the annual meeting.

A partial report, showing the progress of the work, we submit at this time.
